I had my DVDs die, so I did research to see what is the best version to get.
Extended 4K HDR version (20th anniversary remasters): These were based on the HD masters, but they added heavy noise reduction that erases the film grain and fine detail (waxy people, buildings, and landscapes), and the Fellowship is particularly bad with reduced highlight detail. They added a white filter and vignette to flashback scenes across all three films. Color is ok but a bit desaturated (especially Fellowship), scenes like the Mt Doom preamble are pale and don't look hot. Audio quality is great, with Atmos height channels and good bass extension.
HD (BluRay) Extended edition (2011): superior detail to the 4K version, best way to watch TTT and RotK, authoritative bass DTS Soundtrack. No noise reduction, the fine film grain is classic and allows the fine detail to come through. However, Fellowship is particularly bad, there's a green tint washed over the image (you even see the title sequence having a dark green background instead of black, and this lasts the whole movie), and there's less details in the bright highlights than the DVD release; for an SDR release the dynamic range is even less than the DVDs. Everything in the Shire and Rivendell scenes has less color pop, desaturated in addition to being green.
Then, there's the HD Theatrical release. Shorter runtime, more loose ends, you get to know the characters and their backstories less, no "appendixes" bonus content, but... these are still great movies, and you get the original color like the cinema and DVD releases, no detail blurred away, no digital artifacts, original dynamic range, and of course for people being introduced to the films for the first time the runtime is less intimidating and the pacing is quicker. Of course this isn't a consideration for digital copies, but it's worth mentioning the theatrical versions of the movies movie fit on one disc each.
Oddly enough, I haven't seen any YouTube dissertations on the production quality of the 4K HDR Theatrical release. It's almost like passionate people view the extended cuts as the definitive editions
Hope this helps at least one person. Note: I don't know if they've tried to remaster it again since 2020, but since they can't seem to access whatever master was used for the theatrical version and the extended scenes from before they added the green tint, it seems like we're just going to get copies of copies from now on.
A heads-up... I'm not seeing the featurettes in my Prime Video app.
The good news is it's Movies Anywhere & I am seeing them in my Fandango app.

This is the extended Lord of the Rings trilogy in 4K digital form, with the special features and featurettes adding real value for fans. The bundle is Movies Anywhere compatible, and the extras appear in the Movies Anywhere or Fandango app even when they do not show in Prime Video. The deal price can surface differently depending on the landing page, and some purchases have been complicated by gift card or credit application. The main caution is digital ownership, since access and downloads can be affected by platform rules or account issues. A strong digital pickup if you want the extended cuts and bonus material.
Common Questions (6)
The 4K HDR remasters have strong Atmos audio and improved white balance over the older green-tinted HD Blu-rays, but they also use heavy noise reduction that can soften fine detail and reduce highlight detail. The 2011 HD extended editions keep more detail and DTS audio, while the theatrical versions preserve the original color and pacing.
The bundle is Movies Anywhere compatible, which means it can stay tied to your account across supported services. Amazon's terms also say purchased digital content may become unavailable because of licensing restrictions, so it is not the same as owning a physical copy.
The featurettes may not appear in the Prime Video app, but they do show up in Movies Anywhere-compatible apps like Fandango for this bundle. The set also includes about 8 additional hours of featurettes on the Fellowship page.
The bundle price can appear differently depending on how you reach the listing. The direct landing page may show $29.99, while the price under "more ways to watch" shows $14.99, and Amazon later fixed the direct link.
The checkout can be confusing: the invoice may show $14.99 plus tax charged against a gift card, while the gift card balance does not visibly decrease and digital credit drops instead. That suggests Amazon may apply credits in a non-obvious way.
Owning the HD version can block the $15 bundle offer. In that case, the upgrade path may only show individual 4K upgrades at about $8.24 per movie.

See HBO blah blah?
Then - movie price?
Then - bundle price ?
Then - more ways to watch...?
Bundle price shows $14.99. But if you click on "more ways to watch" you can see where it actually spells out everything.
*Edit: Amazon apparently fixed that overnight & mods updated with direct link whenever they made deal FP.
I kind of liked it better the other way though. Felt like SD'ers found a "secret" sale almost.

This is a once in a generation series IMHO.
That's the equivalent of me being into early 80s music around 2003. Crazy stuff but I'm glad they like good music imo.
