This Straight Talk iPhone 16e deal stands out for the low upfront price and the Apple trade in angle, especially if the phone is being used as a short term bridge to gift cards or another iPhone purchase. The 16e is eSIM only, and activation or rebranding to TracFone has worked in some cases through customer service. The main catch is unlocking, since the phone appears to need a full year of new paid service on that specific device, and carryover service may not count. In store activation and trade in results have also been inconsistent, so it is best viewed as a deal with some setup friction.

  • The phone can unlock after completing a year of paid Straight Talk service, which enables moving it to another compatible carrier afterward.

  • Rebranding through TracFone's activation flow can work for some iPhone 16e units, which may help with later unlocking.

  • Apple trade-in can succeed for some iPhone 16e units when activation and basic usage steps are completed before the trade-in visit.

  • Activation may be possible by rebranding via TracFone customer service when TracFone's website denies activation as locked to another carrier.

  • Unlocking eligibility requires new paid service on the specific phone, and carryover service may not count toward the required unlock timing.

  • Rebranding and unlocking outcomes are not guaranteed after Verizon's takeover, and eligibility can be blocked for ineligible IMEIs.

  • Apple trade-in value can come back as zero or be canceled as ineligible, and some Apple Store managers may refuse overrides for devices purchased from Straight Talk.

  • Transferring the eSIM before the one-year requirement can deactivate the phone and prevent it from meeting unlock timing.

128gb just isn't enough anymore, especially with Apple randomly gobbling up space for system files

I'm going to wait until all the MVNO's offer the 16e and possibly the 17e's around black friday and determine how much trade-in value is assigned by Apple around then. In the past, I've bought a few 16e's and traded them in to Apple for $310 making about $110 (or a bit more) in Apple gift cards, this essentially bakes in a discount in all Apple purchases I make on Apple.com. I kept one to use as a beta tester for new iOS operating system updates. I can't take credit for this. I learned from other Slickdealers who are amazing. On a different note, don't buy this 16e unless you're doing this hack. The 16e had compromises that are not acceptable. The 17e is a much better value. In addition, it's a better value if you buy a used 14, 15 or even 16 unlocked iPhones on eBay from a reputable seller. Filter sellers you see by those offering free shipping + authorized seller to weed out undesirables. I've been doing this for friends on a regular basis for years and there were no problems. Reputable ebay sellers are out there, you just have to create the filter. By the way, I work in IT support doing this for over 25 years and specialize in Apple tech.

Is it possible to start service on this phone, Then transfer eSIM to another to complete the time requirement?
No - If you transfer esim before a year the phone will be deactivated & it won't have the required service time. Unlock requirements are on ST website.

It's locked to Straight Talk until you complete a year of paid service through Straight Talk. Only after that, you can unlock it and move it to another carrier that is compatible with..
I did the opposite a few months ago (trac to ST). I just told the rep I had bought it for a gift for my mother(which was true) and didn't realize she was on ST and not trac. They didn't question me just conversation in about 5+mins.

I was able to get it rebranded just through the activation flow on TF. Apparently ymmv
How does one do this? Do you just activate on TracFone.com instead?

Since iPhone 16e is esim only you will have to find a support rep willing to rebrand to TF. It will still require a full year of new paid service to unlock (any TF service you currently have from a different phone won't count towards unlocking).
doesn't need new service paired with the phone to be unlocked, any active service register with the IMEI for the unlock required period counts. had done this countless times and it always worked for the past few years, unless they changed that policy with their 365 days unlocking policy.

unlock policy on their website:
For devices activated on the Verizon network on or after January 20, 2026, the rule is that the device must have 365 days of active and paid service. Thereafter Verizon will unlock these devices upon request.

It's new paid service on the specific phone you want to unlock.
Even last year when it was 60 day unlock it had to be new paid service, carryover from any previous service did not count.
I doubt if Verizon has changed the terms to be in our favor - but then no one really knows how the new unlocking policy will be implemented until after January when the first year is up. I'd hate to wait a year only to be told no.

Buy it for $194 (+ taxes) and then trade-in for a Apple GC and get $310. Make $100 on the deal.
