That's annoying.....pretty misleading from Cox/Spectrum

I live in Kansas and have the $30 Internet-only 100Mbps Plan with Cox (it used to be an FCC subsidized plan during COVID). Got the email yesterday about Spectrum bought Cox and the 1-yr free phone line. I haven't had time to read the details to see if the offer applies to Cox Internet customers or only to Cox Mobile customers (I use Tracfone). Anyway, I entered the IMEI of my factory-unlocked Samsung S24 into their BYOP checker and it said my phone isn't compatible.

Dare I give up my $30/month welfare plan now that normal plans won't have data caps? If hard drives cost $1,000 do I even want to download anything anymore anyway?

I spent way too much time on chat and phone trying to switch plans once I got the email yesterday about the Spectrum acquisition finalizing. Gave up on the phone reps, they insisted that I was getting the best offer despite these plans showing on the Cox website. They said they don't have access to these plans. So, I instead used inPrivate window along with VPN to be able to select this offer and sign up presumably as a new customer. Without both of those it always showed a different version of the webpage showing only that I had to contact them because I'm a "preferred" customer. Since I entered my address and name on my existing account (I did not login though), it actually went through as an order on my existing account. I got a confirmation email and it now shows as a pending order when I login into my original account. Hope this helps others do the same and that it actually works.

Keep in mind that promotions can vary a lot depending on your location and what competitors are available. This applies to pretty much every ISP.

My friend lives in the same city and pays $70 for 1 Gig, plus another $50 for unlimited data, and apparently that's the best offer they can get. At my address, the same company offers 1 Gig for $50 with unlimited data included. The main difference is that my area has Cox, AT&T Fiber, and Google Fiber competing with each other.

I called AT&T and told them about Cox's offer, and they countered with $40/month for 1 Gig and adding $200 Visa gift card.

Competition is really the key to lowering your bill. It sucks that we don't have stronger protections against ISPs gaining too much control in markets with little competition. Guess who helped kill those protections.

I can confirm this too - nasty. Even worse, they were recently bragging that my $50 per month for 100 Mbps is locked in for another year or more, as if I'm getting a bargain - even though that's the going price for 500 Mbps, and even so, it makes me ineligible for the free mobile line.

Thank you. I found out Spectrum said my S24 IMEI1 isn't "compatible" because it's being used with a Tracfone/Verizon pSIM. Maybe they will accept the phone if I use eSIM/IMEI2 for the Spectrum line.

BTW, as an existing Cox Assist Internet ($30) Plan customer, Spectrum offers me a free line on Cox Mobile for 1 year. No change to my existing $30 Internet Plan, I just need to pay about $2/month in taxes for the free ($45) Cox mobile line. I don't really NEED another phone line, so I haven't decided if I want to spend $2/month for the free phone line.

Hmm... Cox is still $10/month higher than Spectrum, even though Spectrum bought them out? (1Gb). I think Spectrum is the last company around the KC metro that still advertises "fiber internet" that doesnt actually run fiber to the house. And even though you're on their 1Gb plan, a lot of residents only get 600 - 850 Mb. (1Gb speeds in newer housing areas)

This isn't offered on the website for existing customers so I went through the website on a private window (still had to clear cookies because I went to cox before like that and it remembered me) and searched my address. It offered me the promo and I had it saved to my email instead of checking out right there. I was worried if I signed up again they would double charge me or something since I've already got internet with them. I called them to see if I would be offered the same and they said no and that spectrum doesn't officially take over until Sep 20th and that I should wait until then to see if there is a better offer.
