This ORICO 5 bay USB 3.0 enclosure is mainly a simple JBOD storage box for media servers and backup setups. It has worked well with two drives and on a Plex server, and the 5 bay design can be useful for compact multi drive storage. The main tradeoff is speed, with sustained throughput around 235 MB per second and a shared bottleneck across all bays. There are also reports of random spin up delays, occasional lost connections, and some USB 3.0 versions not reporting serial numbers. It is a practical pick if you want basic multi drive expansion without RAID.

Is this fast enough for a plex server? Attached to a mac mini
I use it with 2 HDDs attached to a Beelink mini PC. Primarily as a media server. Works like a charm.

Server part deals has 16 TB nas drives for about $300 each. If you're being smart with your backup policy and have these in a raid for redundancy you can have high capacity at a lower cost

You don't even need to go anywhere near $280, let alone $700. 😂

There's literally another Slickdeals thread right now for the TerraMaster D4-320 4-bay for $152: https://slickdeals.net/f/19892376USB

3.2 Gen 2 10Gbps, and TerraMaster claims up to 1,016 MB/s aggregate with 4 HDDs. So for basically the same money, you're looking at ~1 GB/s vs ~235 MB/s total.

And if 5 bays are a requirement, we don't even need to leave ORICO: https://a.co/d/0bGehXptThat's

That's ORICO's 5-bay USB 3.2 Gen 2 / 10Gbps model. It's currently $179.99 with a 15% coupon, so $152.99.

So no, the alternatives aren't "$280 for maybe 2x faster" or "$700 for 4x faster RAID 0." You can spend ~$152 and simply not have a 235 MB/s bottleneck shared across 4–5 hard drives.

Also, 10Gbps isn't ~2x 235 MB/s. 235 MB/s is only ~1.88Gbps. A 10Gbps USB link is over 5x the raw bandwidth, and ~1 GB/s real-world aggregate is completely realistic for this class of enclosure.

That's why I was laughing at the 235 MB/s limit. It's not that 235 MB/s is unusable. It's that putting 5 drive bays behind a ~235 MB/s aggregate bottleneck in 2026 is a hilariously bad design when similarly priced alternatives don't have that limitation.

Edit: And to answer your question about how much that "UP TO" actually means in practice: I use the TerraMaster D4-320 in my media server, and I've personally seen it hit around 1,034 MB/s during parity checks across the array.

So yes, these enclosures can actually get very close to the advertised ~1 GB/s aggregate throughput. "Up to" isn't doing nearly as much heavy lifting there as you seem to think. 😄
I am currently using the $279 Sabrent 5-bay you linked, it is much better than the two Orico 5-bay I owned in the past, well worth the extra money.

With the two Orico 5-bay (different models), I experienced random hicuups like slow spin up time from sleep, occassional lost connection, etc, they are quite annoying "minor" issues, but could eat up your time bit by bit in the long run, which may be more precious than the extra $150.

This hopefully will help someone. But not me, I bought this over a year ago for $80.

There's also a different approach: build your own super fast DAS using HBA, so hdd/ssd speed will be the limiting factor, not the interface. I'm going to dump links to examples of parts, maybe it will give someone an idea.

Yw.
But I've realized something thanks to jk_black: with usb 3.1 gen 2 & usb 3.2 gen 2 and their 10Gbps=~1GB/s connection, never mind 3.2 2x2, hba-based das in jbod has no speed advantage any longer.
https://www.tomshardware.com/news...-explained

Only advantage left for hba is possibility of raid config for fast large files xfers or data protection.

edit:
And even that advantage is not quite significant since win11 Storage Spaces.

yep, you're welcome!
I went ahead and purchased both the 9L and 15L size bags as a precautionary measure, and I just received my delivery today and lo and behold, my DAS hardly fits in the 9L bag as in it sticks out over the top before zipping it up. Although, there tends to be a bit more room while using the 15L bag, I can always use old T-shirts to add cushion and make it more secure around my DAS when transporting to wherever so I'll be taking back the 9L version and keeping the 15L instead.

B/c it doesn't since it's NOT a NAS. It only supports JBOD.

What is your strategy with this? plug the HBA card into your PC, and run all of its unsightly SFF 8087 cables out into the drive cage? Most cases don't even have a suitable place to feed those cables through.

I would also use an old enterprise LSI HBA that performs better and is cheaper and more built to last than that linked HBA. Might wanna repaste it though.

Yes.
I use one of the case's expansion slots to feed cables through.
You think cables are unsightly? Shrugging shoulders. Just cables...
