Gray market licenses. This is basically piracy-adjacent.

Now AI takes coding jobs, no one can afford to, or needs to buy such a tool even for $30.

The standard reply from most on these type of threads is that the free version is usually sufficent, or, if you really need (are) a professional, your company would pay for it, or you should get through more reputable ways.

FYI: TLDR, there's no technical or capability difference between this and the community version/edition. It's a licensing difference.

Visual Studio 2026 Community is a fully-featured IDE at no cost. The tooling is identical to Professional for everyday development — the same editor, debugger, IntelliSense, Git integration, extension marketplace, and platform support. For the use cases it's licensed for, there's no meaningful functional difference.

The critical point is the license definition. Microsoft permits Community use for individual developers, students, classroom learning, academic research, open-source contributors, and non-enterprise organizations with up to five users doing non-commercial work.

Professional removes the license restrictions entirely. Any developer doing paid work — freelancers billing clients, agency developers, in-house developers at companies of any size, independent software vendors — is covered by a Professional license with no caveats.

The core IDE is identical to Community. Professional simply removes the commercial use restriction that makes Community unsuitable for most working developers.

One day, this site is going to start selling empty houses for people to squat in. Same logic: it's fine until you get caught.

Question,

Dead serious....and yes...I know I can "Google" it, or whatever. I just would like to know. From people who..."know".

I am looking to learn Python (or some other advantageous $$$ language). Is VS something that can be used to learn coding? To the point of being employable?

I'm a professional developer and, while I have Visual Studio installed, I almost never use it.
I use the free Visual Studio Code (along with other editors based on it: Google Anti-Gravity, Cursor, and in the past Windsurf).

Visual Studio fully supports Python. I do not use Python therefore I cannot comment on how well VS supports Python but it does support it. My guess is that it is as good as any IDE except maybe for an IDE dedicated to Python. For a large application such as what employers have, Visual Studio, the full IDE is likely very useful.

I have been using Visual Studio, the full IDE, since the first version and I used the Microsoft IDE(s) (Programmer's Workbench was one at least) before it. I am spoiled by the full IDE. VS Code is clunky and clugey. There are things easy to do in in the full IDE that take too much time (typing) to do using VS Code. In the full IDE to create a project I click an icon in a toolbar and get a list of templates and I enter a project name and I get a new project (solution) just that easy. VS Code does not even support toolbars. VS Code would be very different if Microsoft had designed it from scratch.

I began programming back when programmers had to punch cards, or get cards punched, to enter them into the computer.

You definitely do not need the professional license. Install the community license.

As a virtual assistant (AI) Cursor has been good to me, at least it was able to do something that other virtual assistants got wrong. I am eager for them to get the virtual assistant portion of Cursor working in the full IDE.

You can install the C# Dev Kit extension for VS Code and then use the ".NET: New Project..." command to get a list of templates for new projects. I believe this command just uses the 'dotnet new' CLI to create the actual project, which you can also use directly in any terminal window.

I never create projects manually anymore. I just tell my AI harness what I want and it handles the details. It can refactor solutions/projects so much easier than I can. (For example, I created a solution/project for a CLI tool to verify BitTorrent hashes but eventually wanted a PowerShell module version of the tool. I asked the AI to refactor the CLI tool to separate the BitTorrent code into a separate DLL project and then add a PowerShell Module project to the solution. It would have been a headache to do manually but the AI did it in a few minutes.)

I have done that and I still prefer the full IDE.

You can do all that using the full IDE too. We do not loose convenience using the full IDE, only gain convenience.

Gahhhh!!!, 😖

You two are already making my head hurt.😋 But thank you to you and Hobbs.

Think I will start out with VS Code and then move onto the Visual Studio (Community License) somewhere..."down the road".

Appreciate. Rep'd!!!
