There was that one case of a Samsung ring that swelled and had to be removed in the ER… which obviously got all kinds of sensational news coverage.
But that's Samsung… you buy anything with a battery from them and you're taking a chance 😉

They used to allow you to connect the data to Apple Health without a subscription; they removed that. You can still get your data but have to manually export the CSV, and upload it to another third party.
After 2-3 years, you'll want to buy a new ring due to battery life degrading to 1-2 days from the original 4-6. So with that in mind, $70 per year for the subscription, $400 over 2.5 years for the base model. Oura Ring will cost you $230 continuously per year at full price.
People should look at RingConn; their Gen 3 is about to release and should match Oura 5's feature set with a better battery (not sure how they do this), no subscription, and the same form factor. Their app is worse, but you can easily sync to various other health apps for free. Plus:
The only advantages of Oura are a slightly better app with a subscription, slightly better HR tracking during HIIT workouts, and they have clinical validation, but all tests seem to indicate that RingConn performs just as well, if not better.
For reference when my oura 2(3?) battery stopped charging after about two and a half years, they sent out a replacement no questions asked.
