A "Hey I just watched a movie" thread

12,438 1,117 April 23, 2010 at 06:49 PM
One of the other forums I go to has one of these threads and I've been turned on to some good movies that other regulars just watched. I was kind of surprised not to see a similar thread here (at least not that I could find.) Big Grin

I just rewatched "Kinamand" - a cute drama about a Danish plumber who gets involved in an arranged marriage with a Chinese illegal. Good stuff (Netflix instant.)

So what have you folks watched recently?

"Kenny" - An Australian mockumentary about a guy that runs a porta-potty company. I didn't find it all that entertaining. The character reminded me of a slightly less over the top Larry the Cable Guy (which I can't stand) and the Canadian "Trailer Park Boys" TV series. 1/5

"Viridiana" - A pretty good Mexican film from 1961 about a nun who takes leave from her convent to see an ailing uncle. It was kind of edgy for the time, and I'm surprised that the Church didn't flip their lid over this in Roman Catholic Mexico. RIYL the notion of "no good deed goes unpunished." 3/5

"Soy Cuba" - Soviet/Cuban propaganda film from the early 60s. There wasn't much to the story but some of the long, continuous camera shots were pretty cool and ahead of their time. 1.5/5

"Dont's Move - Italian drama with Penelope Cruz. The acting was good and the story was interesting enough, but the end seemed a bit rushed. 2.5/5

"The 39 Steps - A very early Hitchcock film. I tend not to like his stuff as much as others, but this one was really good - it reminded me a lot of "The Fugitive". I liked this one almost as much as "Rebecca". 3.5/5.

"Night Watch - A Russian film from a few years ago. It reminded me a lot of "The Matrix" but with Russian vampires (sort of) - I'll probably rewatch it again down the road to catch what I missed the first time. Pretty good overall. 3.5/5

"Red Lights - A French drama - I don't want to give anything away, but I really liked the way the movie was paced and the direction the overall story took. Really good. 4/5.

"Even the Rain - A Spanish film about a movie crew that goes to South America to make a historical film and in the process has to deal with native actors and locals' protests. They were trying to make a point with the movie but the movie kind of landed with a thud. Not terribly interesting. 2/5

"The Irishman - A pretty good movie about a Irish mobster set in 1970s Cleveland. It didn't break any new ground re: mobster movies, but the main character was such an over the top badass that it was pretty entertaining. 3/5.

"Ugetsu" - A very good Japanese movie set in the 1500s. It reminded me a lot of Kurosawa films of that era (but I liked it better than most of his period films) 3/5.

Just finished Full Metal Alchemist: Part 4 over the weekend.
It's getting good! Woot Just about a month or so until I can finish the series.

It definitely seems more serious than the original series, less humor (though they still manage to fit some in here and there). I'm afraid for some characters. I can't wait to see how it ends, though. The ending for the original was so... strange and out of place. So far it looks like this one will be a million times better!

Not that old, think it started in 1999-2000. She must have been pretty young in that.

I like the way "hilarious" is larger than the movie title. LMAO I'm forever reminded of a dvd cover for a Harland Williams film that flopped: "The $17 million hit!"

"Wild Strawberries" - One of the better Ingmar Bergman films. Pretty heavy subject matter but not as bleak as a lot of his other stuff. 3/5.

"Intacto" - At first this one reminded me a tiny bit of "The Cooler" - A guy who brings bad luck to gamblers loses his gift - kind of a revenge flick. It was ambitious but came up a bit short. 2.5/5

"Taste of Cherry" - It was unnecessarly slow and plodding, but decent enough up until the last 2 minutes. What happened at the end actually made me angry. 2/5

"Cyrus: Mind of a Serial Killer" - A very low budget, poorly written and even worse acted horror film. 1/5

"August Evening" - A slow moving, beautifully shot story of an illegal immigrant in the US Southwest man and his widowed stepdaughter as they hop move from situation to situation.
It was long but it was paced so well that it totally fit the film. Very good. 3.5/5

Finished watching Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008). I can't believe I forgot how great this movie was.

Lincoln Lawyer - Matthew McWhateverHay playing a lawyer again. Ryan Phillape can't act at all - he has zero emotional range. It got off to an okay start but then you just feel like the producer and director gave up halfway through. Who shoots a sex scene with Marisa Tomei and Matthew McWhateverHay and doesn't show jack squat to the viewer? Wtf? By the time it ended with some half-baked predictable story line I was already doing something else.

Iagree It wasn't "horrible", but wasn't good either, IMO. Predictable too.

Red Riding Hood - Not very good at all, and I wanted to like it just a little bit.

Lincoln Lawyer - I too, have this from Netflix and hope to watch tonight.
