A "Hey I just watched a movie" thread

12,438 1,117 April 23, 2010 at 06:49 PM
One of the other forums I go to has one of these threads and I've been turned on to some good movies that other regulars just watched. I was kind of surprised not to see a similar thread here (at least not that I could find.) Big Grin

I just rewatched "Kinamand" - a cute drama about a Danish plumber who gets involved in an arranged marriage with a Chinese illegal. Good stuff (Netflix instant.)

So what have you folks watched recently?

Unknown - The plot was a bit silly and January Jones couldn't act her way out of a paper bag but the movie was ok for what it was. I love Liam Neeson and wish they would put him in a movie with a better plot as he really shines in good roles. 2.5/5

Seriously - she is so one-dimensional and awful. It was like she was playing Betty Draper in that movie.

He's fantastic. I still think Liam's best work was in Michael Collins. So good (even better IMO than his work in "Schindler's List")

Wow, someone else saw Michael Collins?

I loved that movie. I stumbled upon it totally by accident on tv and rented it almost immediately after since I barely paid attention to the beginning.

I finished watching Queen of Outer Space (1958), yesterday. Starring Zsa Zsa Gabor, this was pure sci-fi cheese at its greatest: Lame dialogue, day-glo sets, buxom women in short skirts (if you are into that!), and not-quite-special effects. It was also Zsa Zsa's birthday, which I didn't learn until today. She was quite the looker back in the day, and her posse looked the part, too! Recommended if you have had a few adult beverages or if you need lighter fare than The Forbidden Planet.

Swordfish. Computer hackers tapp tapping on keyboards to infiltrate super firewalls....lots of explosions and car crash scenes...reminded me of Shoot em up (My all time fave campy shooting type movie)...
John Travolta as Dr. Evil, Halle Berry as his flaming hot sidekick and Hugh Jackman as the poor reformed-hacker S.O.B who gets sucked into their scheme... 6.5/10

Yeah, if you view it in the same mindset as Shoot 'Em Up, it's an entertaining movie.
And Halle Berry being briefly topless doesn't hurt.

That could redeem any movie. Hell, I'd have finished Showgirls if I thought that was at the end.

Red Dog [imdb.com]

Quote :
Based on the legendary true story of the Red Dog who united a disparate local community while roaming the Australian outback in search of his long lost master

Didn't expect much and ended up being wonderfully surprised at how good this movie was. It just kind of sucked me in and took me on a nice ride full of laughter, tears, amazement, etc.

I'd give it 8/10.

50/50 Excellent! Even Seth, whom I normally don't care for, was good. ****/*****

Watched an odd trio of movies over the last three days: Predators (2010), Up in Smoke (1978), and Green Lantern (2011).

Predators better than I expected, especially when compared to AvP: Requiem. I don't know much about Green Lantern's backstory/history/mythos, but I thought the movie was pretty solid. Definitely not in the Iron Man category for me, but my son really enjoyed it. He hopes they make a sequal where we see how Sinestro became...Sinestro.

Up in Smoke hit the spot, although I felt kind of bad watching it without some adult beverages at the very least.

"Severance" - Goofy and clever horror/slasher comedy. I liked it. 3.5/5

"Journey from the Fall" - Excellent war/refugee story spanning two countries. The storytelling here was really well done. 4/5.

"A Separation" - I thought it was good but not Oscar winning good. I still expect that it will win the Best Foreign category. 3/5

"Save the Green Planet" - Quirky Korean comedy/thriller. 3/5

"The Remains of the Day" – Decent period piece. 3/5

"The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" – Pretty true to the original movie from what I remember (a bit more make sexy time though). Still they recaptured most of the original film's setting/feel (not sure how it compares to the book.)

"The Iron Lady" – Fantastic leading performance. The storytelling was OK but not overly engaging. 3/5.

"The Longest Day" - So good. I don't know how many times I've seen it but every time it's on it's a must-watch. 4.4/5

"The Cranes Are Flying" - Old Soviet wartime film. Not good. 1/5

"Thunder Soul" - Documentary about a high school band that reunites 30 years later. A bit slow and plodding, but a nice story. 2.5/5

"The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" - Good story - I know it's a classic but it was a good 45 minutes too long. 2.5/5

Inception - The special effects were so interesting they sort of distracted from the plot, which was very convoluted. Still not quite sure if I like the movie or not. 2.5/5

It's hard for me to watch movies about The Troubles in NI. DH had to live through all of that, the riots, the bombs, etc. He was knocked down by one of the bomb blasts that killed a policeman so he's very lucky to have come through all of that in one piece.
