A "Hey I just watched a movie" thread

12,438 1,117 April 23, 2010 at 06:49 PM
One of the other forums I go to has one of these threads and I've been turned on to some good movies that other regulars just watched. I was kind of surprised not to see a similar thread here (at least not that I could find.) Big Grin

I just rewatched "Kinamand" - a cute drama about a Danish plumber who gets involved in an arranged marriage with a Chinese illegal. Good stuff (Netflix instant.)

So what have you folks watched recently?

I watched Sugar on Blu-ray last night. It is about a baseball player from the DR that goes play in the minor league. The movie made by the same people that made Half Nelson and It's Kind of a Funny Story. If you like those, you'll like Sugar.

note: the copy that is on pirated sites is formatted and edited for TV (4:3). Get the BD or DVD.

Anonymous - It's an entertaining bit of fluff even though it's a completely fictional and very inaccurate version of Elizabethan history. It centers around the supposition that Shakespeare didn't write any of his works and took credit for them because the true author wanted to remain anonymous. 2.5/5

Had a nice, relaxing weekend and I took advantage by watching a big ol' pile o' movies:

The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938). This is of course a classic, but my favorite discovery that Alan Hale (Skipper from Gilligan's Island) played Little John. Olivia de Haviland looked amazing.

Back to the Future (1985). Always a blast, and the kiddos really enjoyed this one. We hope to watch 2 and 3 before too long.

Cheech & Chong's Next Movie (1980). This one starts off in very hilarious fashion, but quickly jumps off the rails when Cheech's "cousin" appears. Watch the first half-hour and then go do something fun, instead.

X-Men: First Class (2011). This wasn't quite the level of Iron Man or the recent Batman movies, but I definitely enjoyed it. I am assuming they are working on some follow-up movies to this.

Fun fun!

That said, I'm not sure on what planet any anime is so mainstream as to be called something the entire video community has already watched, but I know I kinda wanna torture myself with this series... and I don't even like anime. Either that, or like "Curb Your Enthusiasm" I just enjoy the synopsis while I could never actually watch the show.
I watch some anime, and I've never heard of this one laugh out loud

They're completely different movies, though. Deep Impact is kind of a "oh, man, we're hosed, what are we gonna do?" versus Armageddon's "America, Fark yeah!" thing.

Smilie Goody--I need to get back to making myself write, but I haven't had a lot of inspiration lately. But after that, I felt compelled to at least rant about it. Probably not nearly as much as the animators did: "Now we're all going to draw the same episode that we did last week and the week before, but Kyon is going to be wearing a hat in this one."

After I'd gotten that rant out of my system, I decided that I didn't want to end my time with Haruhi on a negative note, so I watched the movie they made after the series ("The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya"). It's feature-length (and then some: 162 minutes) and was a great improvement.

I think it's required, though: any series about an alien, supernatural being, or general nutcase who shows up and turns everybody's life upside-down _has_ to include a movie exploring what would happen if they disappeared and everybody except one or a couple of characters didn't even remember them ever being there.

Like "A Wonderful Life," except for the "Cute Hyperactive Sociopath" part. (Which I think James Stewart would *not* play well, no matter how much I like him as an actor, so I think they made the right choice in sticking with the crazy Japanese girl.)

Even at 162 minutes, it didn't seem long or slow, and it actually did show some new sides and background to the characters, which the series really hadn't. People were changed by their experiences, or even if they didn't change so much on the outside, we looked at them a little different than we did when the movie began.

So, if you watch the series, my advice is to skip over the second season (or at least the 2/3rds of it that are all the same episode) and then watch the movie. Since the movie is all about "what if Haruhi had never been there?" there's no point to watching the movie without having seen at least the first season beforehand.

Finished watching Horse Feathers (1932) and Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle (2004). Groucho was the top-billing Marx Brother, but Chico sure is slick as well. Good times.

Aiiiiggh! (bang head on couch arm repeatedly). <--- Psst! That's foreshadowing. You have been warned.

.....

And thus, season 2, episode 3, is a repeat of episode 2, with the same actions, dialog, inflection, etc....only the characters are wearing slightly different outfits and when they sit at a table in a restaurant, they sit in a different order.

Then episode 4 is a repeat of episode 2, with the same actions, dialog, inflection, etc....only the characters are wearing slightly different outfits and when they sit at a table in a restaurant, they sit in a different order.

Followed by episode 5 which is a repeat of episode 2, with the same actions, dialog, inflection, etc....only the characters are wearing slightly different outfits and when they sit at a table in a restaurant, they sit in a different order.
Well that sounds horrible!! I can't believe they would carry that on for so long! EEK! Then again, I can see that the only thing mixed up is the outfits and seating order... That seems to make sense. At least based off what I've seen with some strange anime.

Since you mentioned anime, and only because they are super-awesome, I am going to suggest Neon Genesis Evangelion and/or Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood.

Although Evangelion has a kind of Bigeye Scratchhead kind of ending - even the movie... Just to throw out a warning. Although they are doing a Rebuild, and so far it is going amazingly well! bounce

My boyfriend loves buying anime all the time, so I'll be sure to warn him if ever he picks up the one you mentioned!

A great big shining star!

I love this movie. I love that in the end, it's about family... which is pretty messed up considering the subject matter.

Much worse for the fans who were tuning in every week...to see the same episode repeated for months at a time. At least I had the whole season and the "watch in fast speed" option.

I'll keep an eye out for them--I've only been on my current anime jag for a few months; up until the end of last year, I'd mostly just seen Akira, Urusei Yatsura, and a few miniseries or one-off shows.

It's a big genre--I'm more into human interaction, superpowers, and happy endings; I'm not real fond of giant robots.

Well, overall, especially after watching the movie, I did enjoy the Haruhi saga. I wish I'd looked into it a little more beforehand--not just to skip over the "endless eight"--but because the general recommendation is to watch them in the order they were originally broadcast (which is how it was written to be watched), not the order they appear on the DVD sets.

Whoa, whoa, whoa... you're watching anime but never watched Evangelion or FM: Alchemist? dude. Big Grin

I don't really keep up on the stuff either. There's just too much of it. And, contrary to some opinions, not all of it is good. haha. Every once in a while I'll start wondering if there's anything interesting to watch and will get on a kick for a bit.

FMA: note the "Brotherhood" series is a retelling of the first series. The first series was finishing before the comic was, so the TV show started making stuff up, and plot holes and things ensued. "Brotherhood" is basically the TV studio's admission that they screwed up so badly they should redo the entire series. (Probably made some more $ from it too, of course.)

I do think the first episode of the first series draws you in way more than the first episode of Brotherhood, though. Watch episode one of the first series and see if you're not hooked by the end.

Have no fear about Evangelion. It's a "giant robot" show that doesn't actually have giant robots. If you want human interaction, I don't think you'll be disappointed, though it's not necessarily nice human interaction, and if memory serves, it can be a bit slow. If you like happy endings... eh... I don't know if much of anything in Evangelion actually counts as happy. You'll wind up watching Evangelion eventually, but, honestly, it wouldn't be at the top of my list of things to watch before other, newer stuff.

Here's a couple lesser-knowns for you to look into off the top of my head:
Scrapped Princess. It's sort of a medieval, sci-fi, fantasy series. Very underrated imo. Usually anything with "princess" in the title pushes people away, but while it's not hardcore, it's not cutesy either. (Well, maybe sometimes.) The ending is rushed, but other than that, I think it's well done and entertaining. As always, ymmv on that. It's made by Studio Bones, which has a history of making quality stuff.

Spice and Wolf. Not too many series where a wolf god in the form of a human teams up with a traveling merchant and get involved in political squabbles while also teaching you economics along the way. No, really. It's one of those "this looks too cutesy and weird, but I'll watch one episode just to say I did," and then wind up watching them all and recommending them to others, like now.

Just watched The Perfect Host w/David Hyde Pierce. I'd give it 3 stars. Filled in my rainy afternoon nicely. Had some good twists.
