A "Hey I just watched a movie" thread

One of the other forums I go to has one of these threads and I've been turned on to some good movies that other regulars just watched. I was kind of surprised not to see a similar thread here (at least not that I could find.) Big Grin

I just rewatched "Kinamand" - a cute drama about a Danish plumber who gets involved in an arranged marriage with a Chinese illegal. Good stuff (Netflix instant.)

So what have you folks watched recently?

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows
I liked it. I was a big fan of the first one, and while I didn't come away from this one quite as impressed, it was a worthy sequel and the characters were really good. Definitely recommend if you liked the first.

Flame and Citron
Available on Netflix instant. Surprisingly good Nazi flick made in 2008 about Danish resistance fighters. High production value for a foreign film. Probably in my top 10 of movies available on Netflix instant.

Snow White and the Huntsman - Charlize did a great job and there were some cool visuals. Over than that really stupid. My gf was especially annoyed because she thought Snow White was gonna be a bad ass but all she did was cry for the whole movie.

I watched Waiting for Forever [imdb.com]yesterday. 2/5.

I am a sap for sentimental scenes & I was rolling my eyes when I know I should have been crying. Waste of time. Even for a chick flick.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows [imdb.com] - I liked it. Seemed a bit slow at times, but had a lot of the aspects that made the first one a good movie. 3.75/5

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy [imdb.com] - I thought to myself "what is going on?" for most of the movie. Not really my type of movie, maybe I am just too dumb. Seemed like it was purposely trying to be over-complicated - 0.25/5

Saw Snow White and the Huntsmen [imdb.com] this weekend; a rare opening weekend viewing for me.I went into this movie with fairly low expectations; the previews hadn't really grabbed me, and I'm always somewhat suspicious of a remake of a classic story which has a completely different feel than previous popular works. Charlize Theron was the only actor with whom I was familiar, so I didn't know what to expect in that department. What I got was a film which attempts to tell the story in with a darker feel, but sometimes suffers for that seriousness and some bad acting/pacing.

The first 30-40 minutes of the film takes too long to set everything up: the pacing is very slow, and while some of the visuals are striking, many shots are held a bit too long and some scenes stretch beyond their usefulness (especially Snow White's first few minutes in the black forest), so I found myself remembering I was in a theater several times.

After the first quarter of the movie, there is more action/interaction between main characters, at which point the deficiencies in acting become more apparent. Kristen Stewart does better than in the Twilight clips I've seen, but she never manages to get very far from the "I'm confused/scared/unsure" expression, and her tide-turning speech doesn't come across as genuine. Chris Hemsworth does a dutiful job as the huntsman, giving a fairly flat performance with an OK monologue when needed. Based on previous work, Charlize Theron is easily the best actor on the screen, but the scenes in which she ends up yelling awkwardly far outnumber the ones in which she gives a real sense of spite, malice, and insanity, so the primary villain seems cartoony and overdone most of the time.

All the trappings of the original fairy tale are there: the dwarves, the birds helping Snow White, the poisoned apple, the kiss to awaken her from her slumber, the queen's talking mirror, etc. Introducing these elements into a story/setting which tries so hard to be dark and serious is a tough task, and they do feel out of place at times, though the dwarves aren't nearly as cheesy as they could have been. The visuals are mostly great, both in terms of framing and content, but they shine at the cost of pacing and engagement. The epic final battle feels smaller than it should, and the queen makes the stereotypical villian mistake of not dispatching her only real foe the first dozen or so times she's given the opportunity.

If you're a big fan of seeing tales from your childhood adapted to the big screen, you could do worse than this movie, but you will probably be disappointed a bit by the execution: at 127 minutes, it's about 25 minutes too long, and the combination of so-so acting, slow initial pacing, and the sometimes awkward mixing of gloomy realism and fantasy makes it hard to fully engage in the story.

5.0/10 - I'm disappointed that I paid even matinee prices and will never watch it again, but it was worth a shot.

Figured it was made for the Twilight fans who can't tell the difference between steaming pile of shit and real vampires.

Nothing Sacred - Carole Lombard and Fredric March. Really bad for a 30's screwball comedy. Really bad.

Prometheus 7.5/10

Will have to watch it on DVD again, felt like I missed things. Ending was not satisfying but movie was decent enough. Don't expect it to be a horror movie like Alien because it's not. I wouldn't classify it as a horror movie at all.

The Man from Nowhere 8.5/10

Reminded me of Leon: The Professional. Really good Korean action thriller. Slow at first but the action picks up, watch it!

Thirst 8/10

Korean movie about a priest who becomes a vampire after a failed medical experiment. This is my kind of vampire, no glitter in the sunlight bullshit. Watch it if you liked Let The Right One In.

Yes, not my favorite classic movie either. If you want a good comedy with Lombard, try My Man Godfrey

i watched New Year's Eve earlier, and aside from one or two moments, i thought the Outtakes and Gag Reel were better than the actual movie laugh out loud

i just started One For the Money and anticipate a similar let down

Just watched Prometheus. Visually beautiful, connected very nicely to Alien, otherwise was a horrible, horrible movie plot and characterization wise. With non-sequiters and plotholes abound.
