One of the other forums I go to has one of these threads and I've been turned on to some good movies that other regulars just watched. I was kind of surprised not to see a similar thread here (at least not that I could find.) Big Grin

I just rewatched "Kinamand" - a cute drama about a Danish plumber who gets involved in an arranged marriage with a Chinese illegal. Good stuff (Netflix instant.)

So what have you folks watched recently?

The Call - If I was Halle Berry I would've just left Abigail Breslin trapped in the trunk of a car. One of those movies about nothing.

Silver Linings Playbook - Horrible.

It's hard to like this movie since there's five pirates in a little boat in the middle of the ocean attacking a large ship and trying to board it, and I'm sitting there waiting for the crew of the large ship to just pull out some guns and shoot the pirates and have the movie end at the 15-minute mark. And then I spend the next two hours shaking my head at what happens because they could have just shot the pirates back at the 15-minute mark.

Getting warmed up for The Hobbit pt.2...

Dragon Lore: Curse of the Shadow
Elf babe battles orcs and some other bad guys. I'm a bit impressed since it's a lower-budget movie but is done well, from the costumes and makeup, to the acting of the main orc guy, and even the music.

The same company produced Orc Wars.
A princess from a world of sorcery, orcs, and some other bad guys escapes through a portal into our world. But she's followed. So then a Special Forces guy has to show the orcs and some other bad guys that our world also has magic and sorcery, in the form of .50-caliber rifles and other things that go bang.

Fun stuff if you're in that kind of mood. Hey, orcs... Don't Mess With Texas.
Based on the previews for Gravity, that's pretty much what I would expect. The previews remind me of Open Water, which was beyond boring.

Captain Phillips - 15 minutes laugh out loud Haven't seen that one, but have seen several other 15 minute movies stretched into 1.5hr+ movies.

Those others sound interesting though.

I liked Open Water. But being in the water where you can't see the sharks other than their fins or when they suddenly drag you under is immensely more dramatic than floating around in space where you can see everything including sharks -- if there were any sharks in space, which there isn't, but the movie would be awesome if it did, because then it would have space-traveling sharks, but it doesn't, so... zzzzzzzz.

The rest of Captain Phillips tries to be all dramatic and stuff, but when the pirates are trying to board the boat, I think my review will make a lot of sense. The pirates are in what may as well be a rowboat, and Captain Phillips and the crew don't have anything decent to fight back with. Nice of Hollywood and Tom Hanks to make a pro-gun movie, though I'm guessing that wasn't their intent.

I mean, hell, even the guys on the Deadliest Catch TV show have guns on board, and they're just off the coast of Alaska. The average episode of Deadliest Catch is more entertaining than both of these movies, by the way.

The Purge - Started out with a great premise. Than turns into Panic Room. Also so many dumb choices by the characters that you actually hope they die.

Speaking of movies more entertaining than Gravity and Captain Phillips... Big Ass Spider. It's in limited release at the moment but might be at a theater near you. I'll give everyone three guesses as to what it's about.

I had Ghostbusters (1984) on during our Halloween party. The kids even paid fairly close attention to it, even with the candy scattered everywhere. I'd consider that a victory!

Always nice to see great reviews in this thread. Silver Linings Playbook is the most overrated movie of 2012. It was so overrated in 2012 that it will probably carry over and also be the most overrated movie of 2013 since one year isn't enough to contain its overratedness.
laugh out loud God it was bad!

Saw the review for Captain Phillips in the theater before it was released and I nearly fell over laughing when the voice over was: "Tom Hanks IS Captain Phillips." Is this the bottom yet? No original ideas, bridesmaid and groom films, and now they can't even come up with good titles.

Enders Game - A bit different from the book as they had to compress several years into one and did a lot of what went on in Ender's head as emails to his sister. Even though they crammed so much in one movie and it felt a bit rushed, the movie was enjoyable. 3.5/5

The Bourne Legacy - 0/5 - Boring. The acting was horrible. There was no real plot or story, for at least the first 45 minutes I'm trying to figure out if anything at all is going to happen. What little action there was... The fight scenes were so poorly choreographed it looked more like they were playing patty-cake than kicking butt. They REALLY could have used a technical adviser to show them how to properly handle firearms. (Keep your booger hook off the bang switch until you're ready to fire.) But what can you expect when the star of the movie is a gun-hating Hollywood hypocrite.
I remember the previous Bourne movies to be at least watchable, this one was a train wreck.
