A "Hey I just watched a movie" thread

12,438 1,117 April 23, 2010 at 06:49 PM
One of the other forums I go to has one of these threads and I've been turned on to some good movies that other regulars just watched. I was kind of surprised not to see a similar thread here (at least not that I could find.) Big Grin

I just rewatched "Kinamand" - a cute drama about a Danish plumber who gets involved in an arranged marriage with a Chinese illegal. Good stuff (Netflix instant.)

So what have you folks watched recently?

Tonight's movie du jour: Oblivion.

Two minutes in. Why is Tom Cruise still talking?

Evil Dead (2013): No Sam Raimi & no Bruce Campbell, so I wasn't expecting much. The original was a tongue-in-cheek horror movie, but the remake was done as a serious horror movie and it didn't work.

Oz the Great and Powerful: I really enjoyed this one more than expected. It was interesting to see the back story of the Wizard and the witches. Plus, even as an evil green witch, Mila Kunis is still hot. Also, with Tony Cox as one of the Munchkins, I couldn't help but think of a line from Bad Santa and laugh when the rest of the Munchkins show up: "Lollipop Guild, you a-hole". LMAO
Oh yeah, this movie DID have Sam Raimi & Bruce Campbell.

The Call - I have a mixed review for this one, it was good in bad ways and bad in good ways. This movie is a perfect educational film for what NOT to do in a kidnapping situation as the victims did EVERYTHING wrong. Because of this I found most of the movie comical, which it was not supposed to be. I did enjoy the kidnapper's choice of music. laugh out loud I will also file this movie away as another film that should have been over in 15 minutes, if only the kidnap victim had had a gun in the house. Facepalm

Oblivion - turned out to be really good even though the plot confused me. I love the "effective team" weirdo dialogue and actresses.

Magic Magic - What was this movie about? Anyone? Shizophrenia? Insomnia? WTH.

The Stranger Within - Another one where they did a crappy job of explaining the mystery.

Over the big break I watched Our Man Flint (1966) and the great holiday double header of Planes, Trains & Automobiles (1987), and Christmas Vacation (1989). Good times!

Edit: Oops! I can't believe I forgot to mention watching The Gold Rush (1925). I try to watch that whenever we get our first real snowstorm of the season. Now I want to watch the 1942 version to see how they compare.

Next up: Chinatown!

Watched World War Z over the weekend. It was a popcorn movie. Seemed like a typical zombie movie. Except for the whole - we run faster, disease spreads faster, etc. etc. kind of thing. Ermm

Nono1 Only talking about zombie movies and logic still serves well in this case. Hollywood rarely deviates from its set patterns and I'm sure WWZ is no different.

I've read that by the end of shooting, Brad Pitt wanted nothing to do with the director and would not even take direction from him. He would show up, do the scene as he knew it, left. Also, they changed writers midway through to re-write the ending? Yikes, not a good omen.
Wait a minute! They changed the ending? Ermm Was it in the movie? Because the ending was awful. Worst part of the movie! As soon as I realized that yes, that was the end of the movie - it dropped at least two points from whatever its score was.

Stupid stuff all over the place. Lots of things didn't make sense. I don't think it was bad, but it could have been better.

Yes, they had to. David Lindelof from Lost came in to re-write the ending. Apparently the main character was supposed to go to Russia to dig up clues and then would have to deal with the zombies in a different, colder, and more secluded environment, but Lindelhoff saw how it just would not work at all and made no logical sense with what they had done up to that point. So it all was yanked and re-written.

Iron Man 3 - Average. Rather cool though to see Gwyneth wearing the suit.

Storm Surfers - Course I gotta watch every surfing movie ever made but this one blows. Blah.

Watched The Poughkeepsie Tapes. Was told it was a scary creepy movie. It is not. It has few freaky scenes but not real horror, And I am really getting sick of the entire handheld camera guy with real shaky hands for the first person viewpoint. Besides that if you like mockumentary style movies it is worth a watch.

Hmm, I guess that makes sense. I was just curious because the ending they had was sooooo bland.

I finally got around to watching Dredd (2012). It had an Escape from New York vibe to it, and reminded me of a John Carpenter movie. Good times!

Since I last checked in I watched Chinatown (1974). It was of course good, but I don't know that I agree with its 21st placement in the AFI's Top 100 list. Now I need to ask those in the know if The Two Jakes is worth the watch. Thoughts?

Hunger Games: Catching Fire - Great movie and felt as intense as the first. Had almost the same formula as well as it dragged on with plight and feelings of sorrow then rushes into a mix of action heart felt sentiment until the conclusion. I'm actually eager to see how this wraps up (already read how it does).
