A "Hey I just watched a movie" thread

12,438 1,117 April 23, 2010 at 06:49 PM
One of the other forums I go to has one of these threads and I've been turned on to some good movies that other regulars just watched. I was kind of surprised not to see a similar thread here (at least not that I could find.) Big Grin

I just rewatched "Kinamand" - a cute drama about a Danish plumber who gets involved in an arranged marriage with a Chinese illegal. Good stuff (Netflix instant.)

So what have you folks watched recently?

sex with me? Just once? Or did you simply go through the motions of that too? SIgh. Nono2
Hey look, in the beginning it was great. But let's face it, towards the end I may have faked a couple..

Impossible, Mr. Llama.

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones - You'll either like it or hate it. It's like Charmed (TV series) meets Harry Potter meets National Treasure. Good special effects. Nearly lost me during the 3rd act with too much plot but enjoyable. A little shocked though that the MPAA gave it a PG-13 rating when there's incest going on.

That will likely be cleared up in the sequel but in this you had an alleged brother and sister kissing and nearly hitting the sack. But the MPAA likes to limit how many times you can say "fark" in a film? Facepalm

Trouble in Paradise (1932) -
Two pickpockets fall in love but it gets complicated when they set their sights on a wealthy perfume heiress as their next target. Sub par acting but a couple of laugh out loud moments.

Having a blast watching Janis Joplin on Dick Cavett dvd. She was pretty smart and cute actually.

Sharknado - Hi-larious. laugh out loud Doesn't even try to take itself seriously. Sharks fly through windows, get beaten with bar stools, bad CGI, stupid dialogue, and no one living in a coastal town had any warning of such a storm.

The Whistleblower - I didn't get this excessively violent film about human trafficking even after viewing a dvd extra with the person the story was based on. She essentially does nothing of any significance - nothing changes - and nothing really happens to her. It's like they made a movie just to perpetuate misogyny.

Gotta agree with Shaknado - so awful, it's good. I especially liked the totally clear skies in the background with heavy rains hitting the car. Cheesy, cheesy, cheesy.

Come on you slackers, get back to talking about movies with me! :begbegbeg:

Since I last checked in, I have watched eight (!) films, and I'll hit the highlights below:
I'll start with a double Myrna Loy and William Powell double-feature of Love Crazy (1941) and The Thin Man (1934). Both were very enjoyable, although mysteries aren't my favorite, so I definitely preferred Love Crazy. I'd like to take a month or two and drink as much as William Powell did in these movies and see if I run into such shenanigans. laugh out loud

The Raven (1963). I really wanted to like this one more than I did, especially given the cast. I am a big fan of campy, but not when I am hoping to see a cool horror film based (loosely, apparently) on one of Poe's works. I still love you Boris and Vincent, but next time let's play it a little more seriously! We'll see if that is indeed the case in The House of Usher, which I'll be watching soon.

All Through the Night (1941). This was my 122nd and final film watched in 2013, and I think I went out on a high note.

The Ring (2002). I gave this to my wife for Christmas and pretended that it was some sort of romantic comedy. It was nothing of the sort, of course, but she indulged me and we kicked off 2014 with it. This one was perfectly creepy and not at all gory, and I think we both enjoyed it. Of course I'll probably have to sleep with the lights on for the foreseeable future, but ah well.

Save some popcorn for me!

Now that you've watched The Thin Man, you'll need to watch the other five movies in the series. All are enjoyable but the last one wasn't as good as the others, still glad I saw it though.

The film was such a success that it spawned five sequels:
In 2002, critic Roger Ebert [wikipedia.org] added the film to his list of Great Movies. [3] [wikipedia.org] Ebert praises William Powell's performance in particular, stating that Powell "is to dialogue as Fred Astaire is to dance. His delivery is so droll and insinuating, so knowing and innocent at the same time, that it hardly matters what he's saying."[4] [wikipedia.org]

[wikipedia.org]
In 1997, the film was added to the United States National Film Registry [wikipedia.org] having been deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." In 2000 American Film Institute [wikipedia.org] designated the film [wikipedia.org] as one of the great comedies in the previous hundred years of cinema.

Don't forget, actual escape to home was a long shot and they knew it. They point out in the beginning that if they make the Germans waste resources trying to find them, then they succeeded. No one knew they'd be shot as that's against the Geneva Convention. They just figured they'd wind up back in prison to do it all again.

Thanks very much for the suggestion! Now TCM needs to have a little marathon and help me out. Popcorn
