A "Hey I just watched a movie" thread

12,438 1,117 April 23, 2010 at 06:49 PM
One of the other forums I go to has one of these threads and I've been turned on to some good movies that other regulars just watched. I was kind of surprised not to see a similar thread here (at least not that I could find.) Big Grin

I just rewatched "Kinamand" - a cute drama about a Danish plumber who gets involved in an arranged marriage with a Chinese illegal. Good stuff (Netflix instant.)

So what have you folks watched recently?

Don't forget, actual escape to home was a long shot and they knew it. They point out in the beginning that if they make the Germans waste resources trying to find them, then they succeeded. No one knew they'd be shot as that's against the Geneva Convention. They just figured they'd wind up back in prison to do it all again.

Hallelujah, brother!

The Paradise (PBS mini-series) - At first it was like gah, another Austin-esque period drama about finding a good husband. No. If you like Downton Abbey this is decent. A man with a dark secret operates a department store in the 1800's.

I liked it too. There's going to be a third season, don't know when it airs though.

Thanks and repped for that. hug The copy I snagged from the library never mentions it as a series anywhere on the disc or case. So it comes as good news.

The Colony -Well this was depressing. Not having seen the trailer I thought maybe they would find paradise and/or their would be stunning graphics. Sadly no.

What Maisey Saw.

So depressing. SOOOOO depressing. Divorce and remarriage and step-parenting issues and dysfunctional parenting from a kid's eyes. The writers thankfully gave some reprieve but the sad thing is, there are parents that do treat their children like this and it makes me sick!

But a great movie. I really did like it a lot. And maybe it was so depressing because I understand what it's like to be a step-parent... but I really did like the movie.

The Lone Survivor
Damn. Graphic. Gripping. Great movie.

Caption Phillips
Another really really good movie. The scene in the medical bay at the end was so well done. Something you normally don't see.

Highly recommend both.
Both should win awards.

Lone Survivor - Yes, the movie title is a spoiler. It's about 4 SEALs played by Mark Wahlberge, Taylor Kitsche, Ben Foster, and Emile Hirsch, that go out on a mission to capture or kills a high priority Taliban target, get discovered while hiding by goat herders, have to make a moral decision on whether to kill them or let them go, then get into a huge fire fight after the Rules of Engagement make them make the "right" choice. It's based on a book by the only one that survived and wow, talk about going through hell and back to survive. Having read the book, I can say the movie plays it up in true Hollywood style with hardly any character development and altering a lot of elements from the book though it stays true to the book in chronological order. The ending is completely redone. The dialogue is made up mostly as the book either has no dialogue or differs greatly. But for Oscar consideration, they had to make it up as much as possible for dramatic effect. It is tense, gory in places, and harsh but it's not a bad movie to go see if it's your cup of tea.

Her (10/10) - Love this film a lot, so wonderful, original, and emotional engaging. Just a great story about human relationships. The cinematography and production design was outstanding; film was just visually stunning and beautiful to watch. Phoenix, Johansson, and Adams gave terrific performances. A shame Phoenix isn't getting more recognition for this role.

Short Term 12 (9/10) - Love this as well. A very heartwarming film. Brie Larson was amazing here, so impressed with her performance; she totally carried this film.
