A "Hey I just watched a movie" thread

12,438 1,117 April 23, 2010 at 06:49 PM
One of the other forums I go to has one of these threads and I've been turned on to some good movies that other regulars just watched. I was kind of surprised not to see a similar thread here (at least not that I could find.) Big Grin

I just rewatched "Kinamand" - a cute drama about a Danish plumber who gets involved in an arranged marriage with a Chinese illegal. Good stuff (Netflix instant.)

So what have you folks watched recently?

The Avengers - Fifth atempt to try and watch it. Total failer for Joss Whedon. Begins and ends with heavy action with a minimal story line and zero character stuff. Just utter crap.

It is easily. One forgets that all the character development was done in all of those previous movies leading up to The Avengers.

I say thee nay! The Avengers is the best movie of 2012!

Zero character stuff?
Cap and Tony Stark hate each other, then learn to not hate each other.
Black Widow is scared of Hulk from the beginning, (watch her trembling when she pulls the gun on Banner, as if a Glock could do anything anyway), then later gets smacked by Hulk and is trembling even more but finds the courage to become a warrior and not just a spy, then "We could use a little worse" later when Banner/Hulk wants to help.

Banner hates Hulk, but Stark gets him to think about it as a terrible privilege instead of a curse.
Tony Stark becomes a little less of a jackass.
The overlying character stuff of them all sucking at trying to be a team, then after Agent Coulson and a motivating Nick Fury, they stop sucking.

Then there's the whole Loki/Hulk thing where Loki's plan is to use the Hulk against the good guys but then Loki finally gets his comeuppance by none other than the Hulk, and poetic justice is served.

I live in Whedon's World. I love Joss' writing. I love action and adventure. But... Frown

Lately I watched Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009), What! No Beer? (1933), The Egg and I (1947), and Ma & Pa Kettle (1949).

What! No Beer? was the dog of the bunch, and Fantasic Mr. Fox lived up to its name.

Loved Ma & Pa Kettle as a kid, they used to air all of their movies on Saturday and Sunday mornings back in the 1960's and early 70's.

Just looked it up on wiki, there were 10 films in all.

Oh yeah! I got the 8 movie pack off Amazon awhile back. Once I get through those I'll have to track down the stragglers. Smilie

The Croods - a great, funny, and entertaining animated flick. Finally Dreamworks does animation AND story up to par with Pixar in its prime.

That's fair. Same way I saw Grown Ups, basically.
I kept hearing good things about Grown Ups from people. And with the actors, I somehow expected it to be something decent.

I recall laughing a couple times, but it was basically a waste of money. I don't know how so many people seemed to enjoy it! Confused3

And now there's Grown Ups 2. Once again - people talking about how funny it is Ermm No thanks. Maybe if we had to have something on TV, and someone had it around to put on. Otherwise Nono2

Have you seen any of the Don Knotts movies? These two are pretty good, at least they were when I watched them as a kid.

I never talked to any of these type of people. With Part 1, I liked the improv comedy you could obviously tell were in a lot of scenes. It was laid back, easy, not trying too hard and when trying too hard like the arrow bit or the zip line scene, but also through in a few sentimental moments.

Part 2 was all trying too hard scenes, cameos out the ass, and a lot of pseudo-sentimental moments. Best part was at the end when Sandler's character was talking about Quinn's character and how they were best friends then grew apart (true story). I found it to be a bad Billy Madison throwback.
