A "Hey I just watched a movie" thread

One of the other forums I go to has one of these threads and I've been turned on to some good movies that other regulars just watched. I was kind of surprised not to see a similar thread here (at least not that I could find.) Big Grin

I just rewatched "Kinamand" - a cute drama about a Danish plumber who gets involved in an arranged marriage with a Chinese illegal. Good stuff (Netflix instant.)

So what have you folks watched recently?

It's not. Hmm, what's that quote I'm thinking of...

"When Taylor Lautner is the funniest thing in a movie starring Adam Sandler and Chris Rock, we're in trouble."

A little disappointed.

IMHO Saving Private Ryan is much better

All the Boys Love Mandy Lane - Cult classic. Thought I'd hate it but it's different. There's a vibe to it and beatuiful cinematography with a summery mellow soundtrack. Funny moments, terrible continuity issues, surprisingly minimal gore, a long 1 hr 30 min runtime, but definitely a classic. Thumbup

"Blue Jasmine" – Great acting and character development, but I didn't find the plot all that interesting. 2.5/5

"Captain Phillips" - Well acted by Hanks but a bit drawn out / longer than it needed to be. 3/5

"Dallas Buyers Club" – A solid movie all around. 4/5

"Saving Mr. Banks" - You could pretty much guess where this one was going from the start, but Thompson and Hanks really did a good job. 3/5

"Mud" - The plot was pretty interesting. It reminded me a bit of Stand By Me and Sling Blade (even though the storylines were totally different.) 3.5/5

"Before Midnight" - Really good acting, but the story did nothing for me. I don't think I'm in the target demo for this one. 2.5/5

"The Butler" – I usually try to go into movies knowing as little as possible about it, but I heard a radio bit about how much of the main character's backstory was completely made up (yet they were passing this off as a biography of sorts.) The context they provided about the events of the time was interesting, but it came off as preachy and milquetoast. Whitaker was solid in it though. 2/5

"American Hustle" – Good, but it seemed kind of fragmented. The actresses stole the show. 3/5.

Donovan's Echo - Premonition meets Frequency. And what Danny Glover is supposed to be experiencing is not deja vu, but precognition which is something his cold fusion scientist character would know.

Most shocking of all is that Glover, who is only 67, mumbles, bumbles, and inexplicably fumbles his way through the entire film. It's like 67 is his Wiki age and 97 is his IRL age. Sort of sad but funny at the same time especially when his character gets angry and curses or throws things. He should stop making films.

John Mulaney's New in Town on Netflix is pretty funny. It isn't filled with sex jokes like most standup specials.

We watched The Escape Plan (2013) over the weekend. If you can look past the stilted dialogue and mediocre acting, it wasn't bad. It was a fun, popcorn movie that kept me entertained, so I'll take it!

Admission - Tina Fey and Paul Rudd play their usual one-dimensional selves. Started off well with some decent humor but quickly became a drag with a rather bittersweet twist.

Where I Am - Gay American writer, Robert Drake, revisits the place in Ireland where he was brutally attacked and left for dead in an alleged hate crime. Now in a wheelchair a decade later and on daily medication he talks about his journey of recovery and about forgiveness. I found much of what he had to say very disingenuous and contradictory. The filmmakers claim they tried to contact his assailants for an interview and they declined but the details of the incident were very blurry throughout.

I'm not saying Drake wasn't attacked and that the men shouldn't have paid but the lack of details was shocking. You're led to infer he was attacked in public or maybe via a home invasion. Drake says he invited the two men he met on the street in for cigars since they'd asked for cigarettes and he didn't have any on him but I paused it on an old newspaper clipping stating he invited them in for drinks.

He didn't deserve what happened to him regardless but it irks me for some reason that he and the filmmakers set out to tell "his story" and didn't feel the truth was essential. He came across as being proud to be gay and wanting to be an icon but at the same time being ashamed to talk about an aspect of gay culture like having sex with strangers.

Damsels in Distress - Quirky and cute.

C.O.G. - I like David Sedaris' books but this movie, based on one of his short stories just didn't do it for me. 2/5

Not a movie but a three part TV mini-series from the UK. Found it on Netflix instant watch.

Exile
- An excellent cast and an interesting if at times slightly uneven story. Worth a watch. 3/5

"Philomena" - I really liked this one a lot. I don't expect it will do well at the Oscars, but it's been my favorite so far. A heavy topic but Steve Coogan and Judi Dench both had a few funny lines. 4/5

Well, at first I was like "huh?" but then I was like, "uhhhhh" and by the end I was totally "hahahahhahaha."

No, it was just a cheese fest. I like Ryan Reynolds and he's himself in this movie, which is fine. But it basically tried to stuff the entire Green Lantern origin story into one movie while still having a villain and some side plots - and it just didn't work. And that totally sucks because there was definitely the potential for a good movie in this if they were to take their time a bit and let there be some mystery.
