A "Hey I just watched a movie" thread

One of the other forums I go to has one of these threads and I've been turned on to some good movies that other regulars just watched. I was kind of surprised not to see a similar thread here (at least not that I could find.) Big Grin

I just rewatched "Kinamand" - a cute drama about a Danish plumber who gets involved in an arranged marriage with a Chinese illegal. Good stuff (Netflix instant.)

So what have you folks watched recently?

The Guest - Pleasantly surprised that I was engaged thru the whole movie. Lots of plot holes but good action, suspense and thrills. 4/5

Kill Bill Vol I - 6/10

Rewatched it for 3rd time because SIL was watching. Meh. Yawn

John Wick - 6/10

Was super excited to watch this but didn't enjoy it much. I think I got a revenge-movie burnout from watching Kill Bill the day before. Action was great but was just not into it for some reason.

The Judge - Excellent movie about a big city lawyer and his troubled relationship with his small town father judge. Don't want to go into more details and ruin it but it's well worth watching. - 5/5

The Judge

5/5

Good acting, decent story and overall worth a watch for sure.

Lucy

2.5/5

SciFi action type movie (think Matrix meets Crank) where the story and writing was average at best. Would have been a straight to DVD if it wasnt for the 2 big name actors in it and neither does anything special in this movie.

Fury - Very grim and depressing, with a lot of very gory fight scenes. A bit over the top. DH enjoyed it more than I did. 2/5

Boyhood. Nearly 3 hours long. Within 20 minutes I was saying, "Please get better." It didn't get better.

Interstellar. Needs more car chases or something.
We watched both of these movies this weekend... Both were very "meh". I didnt have high hopes for Boyhood because it seemed all the hype was in it being a movie filmed over 13 years. And yep... really nothing happens in the whole thing.

Interstellar was the same. "Oh yeah? Ok then... wish I had spent my time watching one of the Fast and Furious movies for the 90th time"

Oh well... time to check out The Judge next I guess Smilie

I watched Louis Theroux: By Reason of Insanity yesterday. Louis visits mental hospital in Ohio and interviews some of the patients. Is available on BBC's website.

I liked the lady doctor the most. It seemed like she is very emotionally invested in the job and really cares about the patients.

Miss Potter - The story of Beatrix Potter, who created Peter Rabbit, both the paintings and the stories. The movie covered her creation of the books and her struggle to get them published, as well as her struggles (in Edwardian England) to become independent from her parents. It was very well done, although I think they may have changed a few things for story continuity. 4/5

Cowboys vs. Aliens - 4/5 - a fun popcorn flick. Don't expect much beyond cowboys and aliens shooting at each other, which, let's face it, is really all you need in a good popcorn movie.

The only topless scene was with Daniel Craig. The only tight pants were worn by Daniel Craig. This, despite the fact that there were two very attractive women in the movie. Thankfully, Harrison Ford was not topless and did not wear tight pants.

Princess Kaiulani - Set in the final years of the nation of Hawaii, the story centers around Crown Princess Kaiulani and her struggle to save Hawaii's independence. Very interesting and well acted, not sure how accurate it was, since I know very little about that period. 4/5

Note:
There are a few subtitles in some of the scenes but the movie is mostly in English.

The Voices
Ryan Reynolds stops taking his meds and starts talking to his dog and cat who help him debate the positives and negatives of killing people. Seems like they could have done more with it, but overall a good movie.

The Duff
High school comedy about The Designated Ugly Fat Friend and fitting in. Hits you over the head at times with the heartfelt social commentary and moral lessons, but it still gets a passing grade. (get it? school? grades? yeah.)

Mythica: A Quest for Heroes
From my favorite small production company Arrowstorm Entertainment. You may have seen their other movies such as Saga: Curse of the Shadow, Dragonfyre/Orc Wars, Zombie Hunter, and Survivor.

Kevin Sorbo gets top billing, but he's only in it a few minutes. But that's ok because the rest of the movie is filled with orcs and pretty good troll special effects and not-as-good spider special effects and sword fights and fine honeys showing off their magic. Things get a little cheesy and hammy towards the end, but it's still more fun than plenty of big-budget movies that make me shake my head as I wonder, "Who wrote this crap?"

And as a special bonus, you can watch it free right here: http://www.contv.com/detail-movie...or-heroes/

And as an extra special bonus, you can also watch Bruce Campbell's Comic-Con convention game show on that site called Last Fan Standing.
