One of the other forums I go to has one of these threads and I've been turned on to some good movies that other regulars just watched. I was kind of surprised not to see a similar thread here (at least not that I could find.) Big Grin

I just rewatched "Kinamand" - a cute drama about a Danish plumber who gets involved in an arranged marriage with a Chinese illegal. Good stuff (Netflix instant.)

So what have you folks watched recently?

Isn't James Bond just a fake name for 007 and the actual name of the agent is never truly known? So they can sub in and out as many bodies into that role as they wish. And isn't Ethan Hunt his real name, not a pseudo-name?

Just saw The Man From U.N.C.L.E. It was rather entertaining. Perfect balance of humor and action. I would recommend it.

the movies are about IMF, and called Mission Impossible. not Ethan Hunt Impossible, or Mission Ethan Hunt. he's just another agent.

I'm not a fan of his work but have seen a few movies he's been in, mostly at DH's urging. Have only seen the first MI movie though, even though back in the day I watched the TV series.

No, it isn't. Its the movie companies decision, if Cruise were to make a movie that bombed, he would be replaced in a heartbeat with someone better.

As for the Bond movies, the Brits have never had an issue with replacing an actor in a movie series and not giving an explanation. I'm surprised they haven't chosen Idris Elba or some other great black actor to be Bond. They've done that on the stage with no issues in the past.

Tom Cruise was great in Risky Business and Interview With a Vampire. And although I can't picture any other actor as Maverick in Top Gun, my husband (a 23 year Navy jet pilot), always lets me know that Tom Cruise sucked in that movie. laugh out loud

A few months back I saw the original Endless Love (the one with Brooke Shields) and lo and behold, Cruise had a bit part in that movie. He's like kevin Bacon .. kind of shows up in sh*t when you least expect it. laugh out loud

You misinterpret. I mean it's his franchise to give up as in if he wants to keep doing it, he'll keep doing it and the movie studios will be more than happy with that. Because the studios know one thing and that is name recognition and that goes very far with a brand like Tom Cruise both domestically and worldwide. Unless MI movies start turning into duds or Cruise diminishes his name/brand, then it's his to lose/give up I feel. I'm not a huge Cruise fan but he's earned the right to call his shots in Hollywood so I think he has more pull with that franchise than most think.

Right, but wasn't the whole premise of the movies are based on Ethan Hunt. The original show was based on a covert organization that took care of missions of security worldwide. Yes one can argue that it's about MI and not about the character, but nothing about this franchise has made it seem like it's anything less than Ethan Hunt and his merry men.

Now I can see this franchise rebooted after Cruise gets done with it and just like Bond, introduce someone newer, younger, fresher, and keep on going or introduce a group of new characters of different names and just keep on going.

See, as an actor he's closely tied to the series, and he's a producer, which means he's even more closely tied to the series. I'm not saying they can't replace him, just that there's sufficient evidence to say that he's got a bit of a vote.
