This GL.iNet travel router is best for turning one hotel, cruise, or tethered connection into shared Wi Fi for multiple devices. It can handle the captive portal once, then keep phones, laptops, cameras, consoles, and streaming sticks online through the router, with VPN support and a side toggle for quick on and off. It also works as a wireless bridge or wired router at home, and runs OpenWrt out of the box with two 2.5 GbE ports and USB power. The main limits are that it is still just a router, not a modem or cellular device, and cruise lines may crack down on travel routers.

Common Questions (5)

  • It connects to the hotel or cruise Wi‑Fi once, then shares that connection to all your devices through the router. That avoids logging into the captive portal on each device and can bypass device-count limits; on cruises it can also let one paid Wi‑Fi package cover multiple devices.

  • Yes. It can be powered from USB, including a car USB port, and used with phone tethering to share that data connection with multiple devices. That makes it useful for road trips or places where you want one shared connection for laptops, tablets, and game consoles.

  • No. It is a router, not a modem, and it does not include a cellular radio or SIM slot. You still need an internet source such as hotel Wi‑Fi, Ethernet, or a phone tethered to provide data.

  • Yes. The side toggle can be configured for easy VPN on/off, and router-level VPN can encrypt traffic for every device connected to it. It can also be used to reach a home network from any connected device.

  • Yes. It can act as a wireless backhaul, AP/client bridge, or wireless Ethernet bridge for devices without Wi‑Fi, and it runs OpenWrt out of the box. Two 2.5GbE ports and USB power make it practical for home networking setups too.

Okay so hotel limiting the number of devices make sense. However, why can't people just use their carrier's data plan then or hotspot instead? Is it because they would be using a ton of data if they don't have unlimited data plan like if they youtube and things like that? So if you only have say 5gb of data a month, then you could use most of it up youtubing right?

What about in terms of security camera? Would this help if you want to bring a wyzecam with you when you are traveling and at different hotels? Since a wyzecam needs internet connection, you connect it to your hotel's wifi? Then you can check your wyzecam when out of the hotel with your phone? Or you can still do this without this travel router? You can but it isn't that secure?
Usually a carrier's plan has a limit because they start charging you extra, or 5G isn't always going to be as fast and or stable as hotel Wifi. You can also set up an VPN at the router level, so all your devices traffic is encrypted at and the hotel can't see what sites you are visiting, or if you want to set up a VPN to your home network, you can access your home network on any device you connect this to.

Okay. What about if you are by yourself but want to set up a wyzecam in the hotels that you are staying at then? Is buying this pretty important if you want to check your security camera while you are not inside your hotel room?

Works great on cruise ships to purchase one WiFi device package and share it with all devices in the cabin. However, be cautious as cruise lines are beginning to crack down on them due to the impact on their revenue from expensive WiFi services.
i did this a few weeks ago on a cruise and it worked great. We were able to connect 6+ devices and it made the $40/day wifi cost a little less painful.

From my research, they use different CPUs and the general consensus is that the tp-link version will not get openwrt. I remember seeing some users having issues with the tp-link having an extremely slow switching to aps. So I think if you are roaming around on a cruise ship, it will hold onto a really weak signal before changing to the stronger signal.

I originally purchased the tp-link roam 7 on Amazon for $89.99 with 15% cashback, but returned that unit after doing more research and got the beryl 7 at full price.

I carried it in my tech pouch, which was in my backpack. I traveled from New Jersey on Royal Caribbean at the beginning of the year. I've heard that the experience can vary significantly depending on the port of departure.

"Let's go on a cruise to get away from it all and then be online the entire time."

I use this for long road trips for my family who only have WiFi devices (laptops, iPads, Switch, etc.) I plug it in via my car's usb port and tether it to my phone. Boom, 2-3+ hour car ride made much more easy for everyone.

Why can't you just enable hotspot on your phone without this device in the middle?

Is this a necessity if you travel a lot and stay at different hotels then and want to bring your wyzecam security camera with you or not? Because either way, the setup would be the same? But using this would make the setup longer? But it would be more secure?

So imagine staying at 2 different hotels in 2 different weeks. You arrive at hotel with all your stuff. You set up the wyzecam in the hotel room before you leave to go outside. What's the difference doing this without this travel router vs with it? Does it save time? Or it does it use more time? It obviously is more secure right? Either way you need your hotel room wifi password since it has to match?

Then the next hotel you go to, you want to do the same thing. Reason is because you want to see what's going on in your hotel room when you are not there. What about that?
If you're just connecting a single device to the hotel's wifi, this router might not be worth it. However, in your scenario, I'm guessing you'll want to connect at least your wyzecam and phone to the hotel's wifi. By having them both already configured to the travel router, you'll save on setup time. You'll just need to configure the travel router for each hotel's wifi and you'll be done.
