Hard pressed to spend $85 or $140 for some water. Now if made the trip easier up the hills, the name brand would be worth it. The previous slick deal is up to $16 but will be adequate for most!

That's a much better value for sure but actually the MULE does make the trip easier up hills, at least for me, in that it has a waist strap that lets me take some of the weight from my shoulders and concentrate it in my hips. Also the frame is somewhat stiff with taut netting which has better ventilation than standard foam padding.

Not saying that's worth an extra $70, and you're right that the cheaper pack will probably be enough for most, but if you hike enough then the benefits of the more expensive pack might be worth it.
