We got a membership years ago and literally haven't used it once. The discounts are mostly a joke and we cancelled over a year ago.
I've used my AARP membership to get better rates on hotels booked directly on the hotel website. Granted I never had anyone at the front desk ask me at check-in to verify my AARP membership. It's been my experience that the best rates are either prepaid or AAA/AARP.

Not true. You just have to let it expire. I've renewed at 50% off every Black Friday.
This is the way. The half price deals typically start coming by late October, and continue on through November. If your plan is nowhere near expiring around that time, you'll have to plan in advance for next time so that you don't have an active account around that time of year. The one time I just let it renew was when I was getting $49 cb from Amex, so there are sometimes offers you don't need to cancel to get.

Carefully check the prices when doing this. Sometimes I will select the normal rate at the hotel website, then the AAA/AARP rates out of curiosity. I often see the AAA/AARP rates are higher than the hotel club (free) membership rates.

I like the Walmart + renewal deal. That saves $200 over 5 years. Just when I'm out on a date, I'm not going to whip out the AARP card to get my 10% off at Outback Steakhouse. 😁

Yes. In the last sentence of my reply I said "the best rates are either prepaid or AAA/AARP". Regardless I always check all the rate options if the website doesn't display them for me automatically.

Bigger discount than AAA. The server is cool with us so she lets everyone use my Denny's rewards account so I rack up a reward quickly. My coworkers aren't going to sign up for that crap so they aren't losing out on anything.

I got the membership one time so I could get hartford Insurance. Never used any of the discounts, was nothing interested me. And wow how the fee has went up over the years, my question is, and for what?
