FYI, if you have a North Face outlet store near you, I was able to buy a Recon Backpack for $45 last weekend. All of their backpacks were 60% off. You might want to check the store first to see if they're still running that deal.

Not that I've ever noticed. Our outlet store seems to be mostly discontinued styles/colors and overstock, but the quality seems just fine. My wife used a Borealis backpack from our local outlet daily for about 5 years, and honestly it never really failed or fell apart- it just got so dirty that she didn't want to take it to her office anymore.
I've been using an older Surge from the same outlet as a weekend travel bag for well over a decade now, and it looks practically new. (And FWIW, I bought a fairly high-end 3-in-1 parka from the same store in about 2008 and I've worn through 18ish mid-western winters since then. Aside from a few loose threads on the cuffs, it's holding up shockingly well! I want a new coat, but this one just refuses to die.)
