Were the fakes passable or bad? This tool doesn't exactly seem like some kind of difficult to replicate secret technology, I could see a knock off working well being plausible.

You're probably not going to get the same quality steel in the blades and gears with a knockoff. I'd trust Lowe's to be selling the real thing, but not Amazon.

Edit: It's a cam, not gears, so that might be ok, but I'd be worried about the blades.

I have this and it works well except its hard to use by yourself as one hand is holding the drill and one hand is holding the handle on this, you don't have a third hand to use to hold the metal.
