Were the fakes passable or bad? This tool doesn't exactly seem like some kind of difficult to replicate secret technology, I could see a knock off working well being plausible.

You're probably not going to get the same quality steel in the blades and gears with a knockoff. I'd trust Lowe's to be selling the real thing, but not Amazon.

Edit: It's a cam, not gears, so that might be ok, but I'd be worried about the blades.
