The distance between bulbs varies depending on the brand and the model of the string lights. So yes 3 feet apart is normal

Yeah, I got one that is wired and is also 3' apart. Not as bad if you plan on hanging bulbs down sagging

I don't have to hang these right? I have stepped backyard and I am thinking of just laying them on the ground in my highest step by my wall that you really cannot walk up to all the time any way. Thoughts?

purchased two sets of the 100' lights. Ran them along the same path but offset so they are 1.5' apart with a solar panel at each end. Can use one strand or both depending on how much light is needed.

Yup in market to buy one for my backyard so did some research, 2' apart is the standard, 1' apart if you really want bright, 3' is a little stretch but works if you don't mind less bulbs.
