I think the premium also adds the piece that lets you slide open the lid (instead of taking it off and hanging it).
Also, heat protection handles on the damper opening (?)
The lid on the premium also has a thermometer.
I think it is worth the extra and would wait on a deal for that one.
This 22 inch Weber kettle is praised as a durable, versatile charcoal grill that delivers even heat and strong flavor for everything from steaks and burgers to brisket and pork butt. The One Touch cleaning system and tool hook handle are useful upgrades, and the green special edition adds some extra style. The main drawback is the ash setup, since this version uses an open tray rather than the enclosed ash bucket found on Premium models, and the built in thermometer is missing. It still looks like a solid kettle if you value Weber longevity and simple charcoal cooking.
Charcoal cooks who want a durable backyard grill, because it holds up for years outdoors with little rust and no major parts replacement.
Steak and burger cooks who like simple heat management, because it heats evenly, reaches about 450°F by design, and can sear well with coals banked to one side.
Grillers who want an easy upgrade path for temperature monitoring and fuel control, because a thermometer can be added and the grate can be swapped for a better one.
Buyers who want an enclosed ash bucket and cleaner ash handling, because this model dumps ash into an open tray that can leave hot coals blowing around.
Shoppers expecting the premium One-Touch feature set, because this version lacks the ash catcher, lid thermometer, and other upgrades found on higher trims.
People who need precise built-in temperature readings, because the lid thermometer is absent or inaccurate enough that an external thermometer is preferred.
Grillers who want a larger, more feature-rich kettle without modifications, because this model has a basic grate and fewer accessories than upgraded versions.
It includes the One-Touch cleaning system, but this version dumps ash into an open tray between the legs rather than an enclosed ash bucket. The ash catcher/bucket is a separate upgrade on higher trims like the Premium/Master Touch, and some commenters prefer those models for cleaner ash handling.
Yes; multiple owners report these kettles lasting 15-20 years or more with minimal rust and no major repairs, even when left outdoors. They also cook evenly, stay around 450°F by design unless you push them hotter, and handle steaks, burgers, chicken, brisket, and pork butt well.
This model is the simpler Original Kettle: it has the One-Touch cleaner, but not the ash bucket, lid thermometer, or lid holder found on Premium/Master Touch versions. The Premium/Master Touch trims add those convenience features, plus other upgrades like a better grate and more accessories.
Yes. A thermometer can be added by using the top vent rivet hole or drilling a small hole in the lid, and the ash collector can be added by popping it into the leg sockets. The ash collector part is about $60-$70, so buying a used kettle with one already installed can be cheaper.
If you qualify, the Military exchange can lower the price and also provide free shipping and no tax. One buyer reported paying $89.10 that way, and another found a floor model for $50 after negotiation.
This is in-store only and almost impossible to find, don't waste your time. I have gone twice to two different stores that say "limited stock" and when i get there they check on the computers for me and there is nothing. This is just to get you to the store to buy other things.
I bought two in late summer 2020, one for our vacation house 100 yards away from the ocean one for my parents house, both are still trucking with zero parts replaced and nearly no surface rust.
For those that haven't experienced the magic of a Weber, these are amazing. If you follow the directions, there really is no way to screw up your food. By design these don't get much over 450 degrees and the heat is super even. For ages I though propane was a nice even heat, not even close. And of course you get great flavor. I do agree with others that the way to go is the one with the enclosed ash catcher though. That's my only regret.
450? does that make it a little underpowered for a good steak sear?
Yes, it does, however you can bank the coals up on one side and use that for the cook and then for final searing. The other option is you can load it up with a little more fuel and then leave the lid just a bit cracked, it doesn't take much and it will happily cruise to 550-600. There are other options as well, but unless you are used something high end like a kamado, cooking steaks directly over the coal will be great, they'll get plenty seared for medium. Its only a bit of a concern if you sousvide or like super rare that you will need to bank coals. If you are coming if a regular gas grill, you'll be more than happy.
I really wanted the premium version. Csn you just take this and add the ash bucket? Is it that simple?
You can add the ash collector easily. They just pop into a gap in the leg sockets. But they're like $60 or $70. It might be cheaper to buy a used kettle with an ash catcher, swap them, and then sell off the used kettle with a newly replaced ash pan.
Yes, but it's my mistake. Both grills have the "One-Touch" cleaning system. However, you don't want this one because when you operate the cleaning handle, it just dumps the ash onto the open tray that sits between the legs. There, the hot coals just sit and blow around until you physically remove the tray after it cools down. I believe the newer system is called the "master Touch" or "Premium" model. It has the ash bucket and adjustable air intake. Apparently, the posted model has been discontinued by Weber. Home Depot must have a warehouse full of these that they need to dump. HD needs to stop selling this model.
The ash bucket is nice, but the pan is OK. Just empty it often enough that you aren't letting embers fall onto the deck or the ground. I try to do it the next day when I put the grill back.
