Please recycle Lithium properly.
However, lithium batteries are an option for a reason. Below are some of the strengths of lithium:
- In high drain devices, normal AA batteries don't get nearly their advertised usage. Lithium batteries do a better job of providing their advertised capacity.
- Lithium batteries handle extreme temperatures far better than basic, inexpensive alkaline.
- Basic alkaline batteries, and maybe even rechargables, are prone to leaking that weird whiteish-blueish corrosive stuff. Lithium batteries don't leak as far as I'm aware.
- Lithium batteries have a much longer shelf life.
Based on the above, there are scenarios where it may be worth paying more for lithium. For example, if replacing batteries is a major challenge, it might be worth paying an extra few dollars. Or if you have devices that live outdoors, lithium batteries that handle hot summers and cold winters might be worthwhile.As an example, I keep a powerful flashlight in my trunk for emergencies. It gets used so rarely that I have to worry about the batteries going bad with age. This is something that I want to know will work if I'm stuck on the side of the road at night. I did some research and ended up replacing the batteries in the flashlight with lithium ones. That way I know that for the next 15-20 years, the flashlight will work if it's needed. Even if it's been sitting in an incredibly hot or cold vehicle for hours.
Don't take my word for it. Do a quick Google search for the pros and cons of lithium batteries to make sure I didn't get any of the details wrong. And decide if there's any reason to spend extra for something like this. Like I said, they are overpriced for most things. They are mainly worthwhile for specific scenarios where time or reliability is important.
