Pinto beans contain very, very low levels of PHA, especially compared to things like kidney beans. Per the Illinois Extension, "Luckily, research has shown that other common dried beans, such as pinto or navy, have very low levels of PHA and therefore, are not a cause of concern."

Brine the beans in high salt water for 24 hours, drain and cook in a large amount of water and onion; add salt and a little msg at the last 30 minutes. The softest most velvety beans ever.
