Be aware that early batches have Dpad issues, so I'm not sure if this is still old stock. I've been wanting to get one for a while but have been wary of the hardware issues.
The GameSir Pocket Taco is a vertical Bluetooth mobile controller aimed at retro gaming on a phone, especially Game Boy and other emulator setups. It feels natural for Game Boy, works with Cannoli and other emulators, and the concept is appealing for the right use case. The main drawback is the D pad, with reports of false diagonals, mushy buttons, and awkward control in games like Tetris or Contra. The form factor also takes up screen space and can feel awkward or uncomfortable for longer sessions, so it suits short, specific play sessions best.
People trying a phone-mounted retro setup for short sessions, because it can be a workable way to play when the controls feel acceptable.
Early batches can have severe D-pad issues, including false diagonal inputs and mushy directional presses. Some units appear improved, but the D-pad may still feel less precise than expected for games like Tetris or Contra.
It can feel awkward because the controller sits over part of the screen and may be uncomfortable to hold for long periods. It works best for a specific use case, especially 4:3 retro games in an emulator that can place the game in the top half of the phone screen.
Walmart offers free 30-day returns to stores, which makes it a lower-risk buy if you want to try the controller. In at least one case, Walmart told the buyer to keep it and refunded them during the return process.
It feels most natural for Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance games, and it also works with other emulators. One setup mentioned using the Cannoli app from GitHub for GB/GBC/GBA ROMs.

I have a first batch. The dpad has really bad false diagonals such that I couldn't even control Tetris blocks. I contacted Gamesir and their solution was to turn off diagonals completely in their app settings.
Dude, Contra is from the farking '80s. You shouldn't be playing that shit anyway. There are probably modern Indie alternatives to that.
Just because you made this comment I'm never going to give modern indie alternatives a chance - Contra will always win from now on thanks to your comment.
C'mon man. Your SD account is over 20 years old, I assume you're old enough to get hit with nostalgia. It's a good day whenever I get a chance to play the classics. My retropi gets more playtime than my PS5 by far.
I mean, his avatar is actually Hitler, so I wouldn't count on anything he says being in good faith.

Contra is just an example, meaning that anything that needs a precise decent d pad will suck with this pocket taco. The Dpad and face button are mushy and really really bad. 8Bit do also has a similar device that clips to your USB C port, but I have not tried it.
I loved contra but could never get past the first level. Maybe once but died quickly in the second. The music is awesome.
Me and my cousins used to play Contra back in the 90s and used to finish the entire game without dying once. We were that good at it. Miss those days. I even bought this game for my Xbox but the feel just isn't there.

Brother, look into SBCGaming. The new handhelds are insane. Get a Miyoo mini plus, 64gb sd card, and internet archive for Roms. Love playing all the games I couldn't afford as a kid.

There's also a 8bitdo one that is kinda cool but the shoulder buttons are weird. This category in general is less useful than it seems.... having a controller eat up half your screen just makes it weird to get in and launch stuff etc.
I'm with you. Seems neat until you realize it only works well on 4:3 and that is assuming your emulator of choice can be even be forced to display on the content on the top half of your phone screen.
*That being said the Taco is supposedly really great if you have the proper use case.

People trying a phone-mounted retro setup for short sessions, because it can be a workable way to play when the controls feel acceptable.
Retro handheld fans playing Game Boy, Color, or Advance ROMs, because the controller feels most natural for those games.
Players who want a vertical controller for 4:3 emulation, because it works well when the emulator can keep gameplay in the top half of the screen.
Tinkerers willing to disable diagonals in software, because the controller can still be usable after that workaround.
Players who need precise D-pad input for platformers or puzzle games, because the D-pad can feel mushy and produce false diagonals.
Gamers expecting a quick grab-and-play setup, because assembling the controller can be awkward and time-consuming for short sessions.
People who want comfortable extended play, because the grip can become uncomfortable over longer sessions.
Players who rely on diagonals for movement, because disabling them removes diagonal input entirely.
