The GameSir Pocket Taco is a vertical Bluetooth mobile controller aimed at retro gaming on a phone, especially Game Boy and other emulator setups. It feels natural for Game Boy, works with Cannoli and other emulators, and the concept is appealing for the right use case. The main drawback is the D pad, with reports of false diagonals, mushy buttons, and awkward control in games like Tetris or Contra. The form factor also takes up screen space and can feel awkward or uncomfortable for longer sessions, so it suits short, specific play sessions best.

  • The controller can work well for Game Boy, Color, and Advance ROMs using the Cannoli app.

  • The vertical form factor can feel most natural for Game Boy play when using the right emulator setup.

  • Some units reportedly avoid false diagonal inputs, which can improve control compared with earlier reports.

  • Walmart free 30-day returns to stores can reduce hardware risk when testing the controller.

  • The controller setup and form factor can be awkward, including screen coverage and limited 4:3 usability.

  • Early batches reportedly have D-pad issues that can make games hard to control.

  • The D-pad can produce false diagonal inputs that make precise games like Tetris difficult to play.

  • The D-pad and face buttons can feel mushy, which can hurt performance in games needing a precise D-pad.

Dude, Contra is from the farking '80s. You shouldn't be playing that shit anyway. There are probably modern Indie alternatives to that.
Just because you suck at Contra doesn't mean you have to lash out at the game or everyone else.

Be aware that early batches have Dpad issues, so I'm not sure if this is still old stock. I've been wanting to get one for a while but have been wary of the hardware issues.
I have a first batch. The dpad has really bad false diagonals such that I couldn't even control Tetris blocks. I contacted Gamesir and their solution was to turn off diagonals completely in their app settings.

Just because you made this comment I'm never going to give modern indie alternatives a chance - Contra will always win from now on thanks to your comment.

What a take. Contra is a run-n-gun classic. I do another playthrough every couple years.
I loved contra but could never get past the first level. Maybe once but died quickly in the second. The music is awesome.

I'm also disappointed that it took 14 comments before someone mentioned pocket tacos.

C'mon man. Your SD account is over 20 years old, I assume you're old enough to get hit with nostalgia. It's a good day whenever I get a chance to play the classics. My retropi gets more playtime than my PS5 by far.
I mean, his avatar is actually Hitler, so I wouldn't count on anything he says being in good faith.

Contra is just an example, meaning that anything that needs a precise decent d pad will suck with this pocket taco. The Dpad and face button are mushy and really really bad. 8Bit do also has a similar device that clips to your USB C port, but I have not tried it.

Me and my cousins used to play Contra back in the 90s and used to finish the entire game without dying once. We were that good at it. Miss those days. I even bought this game for my Xbox but the feel just isn't there.

Brother, look into SBCGaming. The new handhelds are insane. Get a Miyoo mini plus, 64gb sd card, and internet archive for Roms. Love playing all the games I couldn't afford as a kid.

There's also a 8bitdo one that is kinda cool but the shoulder buttons are weird. This category in general is less useful than it seems.... having a controller eat up half your screen just makes it weird to get in and launch stuff etc.
I'm with you. Seems neat until you realize it only works well on 4:3 and that is assuming your emulator of choice can be even be forced to display on the content on the top half of your phone screen.

*That being said the Taco is supposedly really great if you have the proper use case.
