Has anyone found a screen protector for this phone? I bought a glass one on Amazon, but it won't even apply properly because of the matte finish of the screen. There seem to be air pockets under the protector. And the screen looks weird through the glass, like "interlaced", hard to explain.

I had this device for a few month now, I really like the matted screen and it is easier on the eyes. I'm getting old and the glare on the screen can be annoying. For what I do watching Youtube and reading novels, it works pretty well, snappy and no lag for my usage. I got a leather fold case, so when not in use, it can protect the screen. Not as safe but if I get a screen protector then it'll cover the matted finish.

I wouldn't put a screen protector on this phone. It's got a special coating and reading mode that makes it look like e-ink if you leave it alone.

I bought this phone as ereader and can't complain. It all depends on your needs and expectations. The CPU is fast enough for daily use and light gaming. It has e-Sim for travelling.
To your point: SW updates and long term support is way better on the A37 (cameras too). But if your priority is media consumption, then I would consider this over the A37 (even when it's heavier but has the larger screen).

Are you sure? Metro phones are typically locked to Metro ONLY and DO NOT WORK on TMOBILE (or any of their MVNOs).

There have been several reports here on SD that this particular TCL phone can be used with other T-Mobile MVNO's even locked.

T-Mobile has this free with any trade in on most t-mobile plans. If you have costco near by they wave the $35 and offer a $100 costco card for doing the upgrade. If you are on t-mobile proper that seems the better route and simpler.
