Just my two cents: The most effective way of cleaning a griddle is perhaps hot water with a piece of cloth. No chemical. No pad/plastic.

For those that have these, how exactly do you use them to clean your griddle? Is it meant to be used with water to just wipe down the griddle after cooking, or do you use it to spread new oil on the griddle after you've cleaned it? Or use it for both?

Absolutely this. Scrape whatever bits with your spatula and wipe down with a paper towel + water, season afterwards
