do we have to be concerned about security when using unmanaged switches? I mesn you don't know what it is doing with your info. Maybe I am getting paranoid these days.

Basically, if you have to ask that question, then it is safe in your home network--because you wouldn't be using the tools you can use in a managed switch. (Note: I am in the same boat as you--and use all unmanaged switches on my home network...so I am not trying to be mean or offensive.)

A switch is a repeater - it just sends signals to the right place on another of its' ports based on the MAC addresses that it knows about. That's literally all it can do. There's no security principle involved here. Any network thing anywhere, in concept, can have bad actors put things into it. Typically that can be blocked at the router level (for example, in my Ubiquiti network, I block various countries and various known exploits).

For those in the Ubiquiti network ecosystem, B&H has the 5 port 2.5GB Ubiquiti managed L2 switch at $52. Various coupons and such can take it to $50. For one management interface and such, I think it's worth the extra few bucks.

I've bought the 5 port 1G and returned it in the past. It actually could not transmit at a full 1Gbps, topped out at 700-800 for some reason, whereas 8-port versions reached full gigabit. I think the 5 port lacks the switching capacity. Also, 1Gbps should run about $10 for a 5 port, so nobody should be paying $28 for that.

Good timing. Need a new switch. Might as well get the 2.5G at these prices. I don't need it now, but am planning to migrate that way over time.
