I wasn't impressed - I see this more as a bedroom system - you want a surround sound setup for your bedroom or office. At that, it's perfect, because you don't want bulky speakers for such a small room.
I wouldn't use this for a large room, like a big USA living room.

I only need a 2.1 system for my basement workbench area, does anyone have a recommendation for an ultra cheap AVR to pair with these? Buying used just seems troublesome, as you never know the condition or there's no way to test it. AVR with AirPlay capabilities would be amazing. I don't own a TV, so I don't care about those connections.
I guess the alternative is the simpler, no wire, less messy, single speaker HomePod but costs more than this setup. It's rumored we may see a 3rd generation this year.
