Airalo is a convenient eSIM option for travel, with the ability to buy now and activate later, and it has worked well on trips such as Guatemala. It requires an unlocked phone that supports eSIM, and the countdown starts when you install and activate it, so it is best to wait until close to departure. The main cautions are that Airalo requires ID or passport verification, cannot be transferred to a new device, and support has been unreliable when something goes wrong. It is a practical backup or short-trip option, but worth comparing against cheaper eSIM plans first.
Travelers who want to buy data before departure, because the eSIM can be purchased now and activated later.
Travelers who need one eSIM to work as their only internet connection, because it can fail to connect in some countries and support may be unavailable.
The countdown starts when you install and activate the eSIM, so it is best not to install it until close to your trip. Keep the email and instructions handy so you do not lose the activation details.
No. It can fail to connect in some countries and support may be hard to reach, so a backup SIM or alternate internet option is wise if you need reliable connectivity.
Airalo requires an unlocked phone that supports eSIM. The device compatibility check is important before buying, since unsupported or locked phones will not work.
If you have a visa signature (chase freedom, Costco citi card) or infinite (chase sapphire, capital one venture) card you get free data and discount from Gigsky.
Visa signature: 1gb free data, per card per 365 days + 20% discount when you buy any plan using that card
Visa infinite: 3gb free data, per card per 365 days + 30% discount when you buy any plan using that card
I've used Ubigi in the past but this is significantly cheaper for very good service so far.
Not sure in other parts of the world, but when I travel to the Iberian Peninsula on a yearly basis, these esim providers all connect to the same networks. I found the best price to be Virgin Connect especially when they run promos. Be aware to get the Euro region plans as opposed to country specific.
Shop around. Search for the cheapest esim at esimdb. 5GB/30Days are usually <$2. Maybe try a small plan for <$0.50 to see that it roams onto sufficient networks first, then commit to the $2 plan.
All of these branded esims (Airalo/Saily/even Virgin) are just paying for advertisement.
!!! WARNING!!!
While this is usable and we had personal experience with Airalo and know others who considers this cheap and useful,
do NOT choose this as an only option when travel abroad...
Had to buy buy full price SiM in ADDITION to AirAlo non-refundable, non-functioning, non-supported charge
The problem is their support (or absence of such).
While this did work at one EU country (multi country eSIM)
at another one EU it refused to connect.
The support consisted of automatic "frequently ask questions" kind of advices after me choosing my problem.
Instructions were too general and did not correlate with the actual menu options I saw.
After running into a stone wall corner, discovered that there is NO way at all contacting any support.
Desperate, tried to RE-install. This did bring back some options, but eventually run into the same situation and some menus disappeared.
At some point re-installing became unavailable, support non-existing.
You may write somewhere and they state the expected response withing a week or something.
Good if you travel for weekend or five days...
Bought regular SiM at a local shop.
(but you do not want to be across the ocean when airport shop closes)
[Samsung, established top model, neither old nor too new]
After discovering this I uninstalled the app
This is why I don't use Airalo. Their support sucks, and I had to find an alternate method for internet while I was in a different country. By the time they got back to me, I was already home. Then they made it seem like they were doing me a favor by crediting me back my purchase.

You can purchase the eSIM now and activate it later when your trip is closer.
Airalo can work well on an unlocked phone that supports eSIM.
Airalo has worked without issue on prior trips in the UK and France.
Airalo has worked well on a prior trip to Guatemala using the same promo.
Airalo customer support can be ineffective, with limited contact options when problems occur abroad.
Airalo eSIM service may refuse to connect in some EU countries, leaving you without data.
Airalo requires KYC, including uploading an ID or passport to purchase an eSIM.
T-Mobile base speeds can be very slow, and you may need an additional data pack to improve speed.
