The Onkyo TX RZ70 stands out as a flagship 11.2 channel AVR with strong real world performance, Dirac Live standard, and upgradeable room correction. It is praised for plenty of power, solid build quality, modern HDMI 2.1 compatibility, and testing that appears to beat its published specs. The main hesitation is value, since the RZ30 and RZ50 are often seen as close enough for far less money, especially if you already use external amps or do not need future Dirac ART support. Its 19 inch depth and Adorama return terms also deserve a look before ordering.

Hopefully these sales mean that the RZ31/51/61/71 are around the corner.

My AVRs got taken out by a lightning strike. I want to hold out for an RZ61/71.

I wouldn't. Each new iteration of receivers like any new iteration of any products, in most cases provide nothing more than small incremental improvements not worth paying MSRP for, unless you simply want to pay for the early adopter's bragging rights. You'd have to wait another +2 or 3 years for the RZ61/71 prices to drop anywhere close to this level.

New models coming next year.
The only meaningful rumored upgrades are access to ART & 4 independent sub outs.
That's gonna come at a cost, likely not worth it for most people.
Just look at Denon/Marantz on how little people find benefit of them.

How come the rear of AVRs nowadays look dated? Those have been the same binding post 20 years ago. You'd think for $1500, these should have better binding posts.

If you ordering a expensive item from Adorama, do check there return policy. They are really bad when it comes to returns, you may end up paying for shipping it back and also a %15 restocking fee if the item is opened. SD seems to like them. Almost all deals from them are from staff. Also check there cash back on other sites. You may get $60 as cash back.
SD gets paid by them.

I chime in on these threads from time to time. OP, I did almost exactly what you are planning. I had the RZ830 (One HDMI input went out). I upgraded to the RZ50 and added an external amp. As stated above, I gained the RC, but not much else sounded different. I ran the RZ50 for a while, and then a great deal (at the time) came up for the RZ70. I sold the RZ50, replaced it with the RZ70, and put the external amp in my office. Is the RZ70 a huge upgrade from the RZ830? It is, if you want the latest streaming apps, a better power supply, and much more weight (it feels better built). Can the average person tell a difference in sound? Maybe or maybe not, especially if a solid room correction was done on all of them. I happen to be one of those who enjoy upgrading most of my technology every couple of years or so. I 100 percent know my method doesn't pass some people's common-sense test, and I do understand. Let's be honest, many of us set a budget, and that tends to affect how we feel about upgrades. On the TV front, top-end models haven't changed in price, and the on-sale prices have become much less lucrative. Take a look at the 83" LG G6, G5, and the 83" Samsung S95, and you will see these still sell for over $5k.
What are your thoughts on the RZ70 vs RZ50? (I also moved from 830 to RZ50 and use an external amp)

Is Auro-3D or the other slight upgrades noticable/worth it?

I'm tempted, especially since my RZ50 is well out of warranty now.

RZ70 has no advantage over an RZ50 on external amps. Only exception is if the RZ50 was only partially helped by amps and susceptible to the limp mode.

I got an 83 inch LG G5 for $3799 a few weeks ago. There was a best buy total tech special $1000 off, and I haggled with the manager to take an additional $200 off. I thought it was a solid deal for what it was.

I agree with "shaddai" for the most part. If those external amps aren't top grade, then you may as well use the built-in amps on the RZ70, which does have an advantage over the RZ50. Of course, the RZ70 is a newer model, if that means anything.

I know this thread isn't about TVs. That was a good buy, but unfortunately, it doesn't come around often. I, too, got an outstanding deal on the 83" G5 from the LG Partner Store last November before Labor Day, and haven't seen a better deal since.

Insurance is replacing my AVR, so I want to get a new model... even if the difference is mainly the looks.
