I only use a breaker bar with fastener larger than 16 mm. My go to breaker bar is the Harbor Freight 3/4". I proof loaded it once a year to 600 ft-lbs with the aid of a 4' 11 gauge stainless tubing (2x my expected working torque). Wait for 25% coupon to drop the price below $19. Easy lifetime warranty.

Breaking loose tight or stuck brake bleeder screws cleanly.
Definitely needed when you are working with small fasteners in tight spaces that require extra control or gentle breaking torque without risking damage to a standard fine-tooth ratchet.

Any decent 1/4" ratchet will be able to handle 30 ft-;bs of torque without failure (ANSI specs). Apply penetrant. Wait several hours. Apply heat as a last option if fastener is severely corroded. Longer moment arm translates to more torque and less CONTROL. That's why pros choke up on the bat when they bunt.

Pee Wee Herman mechanic can slip another wrench over the 1/4" ratchet for more leverage.

Small breaker bars are useful for a number of things that are harder to do with a ratchet of similar dimensions.

If you want to break a frozen fastener free it can be useful to repeatedly alternate between tightening and loosening, and a breaker makes that faster and easier.

Breaker bars with swivel heads make it easier to reach over things at an angle when you don't have the right extension or an extension won't fit. You can also reach straight in to start a fastener with a breaker.

I've found many small fasteners to be too tight/corroded for a ratchet. And a breaker bar is often faster than a ratchet - break the fastener loose the normal way, then rotate the handle up and quickly spin the nut/bolt off the rest of the way.
