Dawn Ultra Original is valued as a strong degreaser for greasy dishes and even bike chains, with the refill jug format making it easy to stock up. The price lands close to common trigger points around $0.10 per ounce, but Costco, BJ's, and Sam's Club are cited as cheaper alternatives on a per ounce basis. The jug size has also dropped from 56 ounces to 51.5 ounces, and the formula is described as more watered down than before. Dawn Platinum is repeatedly framed as the stronger option, so this deal mainly appeals if you want the original refill size.

  • The dish soap can degrease and clean a bike chain effectively.

  • The deal can be close to a typical trigger unit price around $0.10 per ounce.

  • The refill pricing can compare favorably against BJ's and may reduce per-ounce cost with Subscribe & Save.

  • The soap can be used as a practical alternative to Costco or club options when comparing per-ounce pricing.

  • The Dawn Ultra refill size reportedly changed from 56 oz to 51.5 oz, which can affect value.

  • The formula reportedly feels watered down after packaging or formulation changes.

  • Amazon cancellation issues reportedly forced returns of multiple Dawn Ultra jugs.

  • Dawn Platinum is described as a stronger alternative, making this Ultra deal potentially less worthwhile.

If you're a member of BJs wholesale club, there's a $2 coupon on a 90 oz. jug making it $8.99 in BJs, but i suppose that could be a YMMV price in store.
True; can get 2 at BJS, 180 oz, for $18 vs 154.5 oz via Amazon.
Once you use a digital coupon at BJs, it becomes available to clip again, well, most of the time. Sometimes up to 5 times. Fyi. Or hopefully there's another paper coupon in the flyer upon entry...

Kirkland is not Dawn. I'm 95% sure of this.1. PG is a large enough conglomerate that it does not need to sell private label when Dawn already is a top seller. (Profit)2. I used Dawn to clean up spilled oil after a oil change. Kirkland does not degrease as well as Dawn, Plat or Ultra.3. My mom volunteers at an animal rescue. They are a charity and donation funded, if Kirkland worked as well as Dawn, they'd switch in a heartbeat. And just a personal note, I end up using more Kirkland soap than Dawn on the really greasy dishes.Just like many believe Kirkland laundry detergent is Tide, it's not. (Tide also made by PG). Also when the motor oil came out, many were speculating it was Castrol or Mobil 1, then we found out it was Warren. Some thought the first single malt was Macallen white label, it wasn't.
What you say is true, Kirkland is not Dawn. But why not just get the Dawn Platinum 90 fl oz for $9.59 from Costco on the next shelf? Still an excellent deal.

Now that I did this... I'll have to return 3 jugs of Dawn Ultra because Amazon wouldn't let me cancel. lol.

Next question is... can you turn Dawn Platinum into a Dawn Platinum Plus by adding a few mL of glycerin? I don't know where to get polyquaternium-98 but that might be optional.
Project for another day 🤷

You can get a slightly different formula on Amazon, just search Polyquaternium. You can try 78, that one seems to be a similar surfactant like 98 w/o buying a 55 gal drum.

I've been trying to simulate something close to the Powerwash cause I'm too cheap to keep paying for refills.

Neat. The tricky bit is DIY without paying more for the ingredients 😅

It seems the addition of organic solvents (glycol ethers) and water softeners (sodium citrate and GLDA) to dish soap makes it Platinum, and the further addition of foam stabilizers (glycerin and PQ-98) makes it Plus.

I imagine some of these could be substituted or omitted. For example, D-limonene is a decent solvent, and sodium citrate alone is probably sufficient to soften your water (Platinum Plus doesn't even contain GLDA). Thanks for the tip about trying different polyquats.
