The earlier gens are definitely bad. I would not even consider 10th gen and earlier unless it's a specifically low power part for specifically low power, headless tasks.

Last week , 2 x 16G DDR4 SODIMM was $120 in Amazon. Now, they are $180. The price of 32G DDR4 at $180, plus 256G SSD at $52, make this laptop more attractive.
Early this week, I ordered a "2 year old" HP Elitebook Refurbished laptop with 16G DDR5 and 256G SSD for almost $600. But I cancelled the order within a few hours, because I did not want to spend another $220 on 16G DDR5. (for the goal of 32G RAM) 16G DDR5 costs at least $220. And 512G ssd costs $85. When I did the math, a 2-year old refurbished laptop has a total cost close to $1000. That is why I cancelled it.
Yesterday, I did order a different "6 years old" HP Elitebook Refurbished laptop with 16G DDR4 from another store for less than $300. I only need to spend $100 for another 16G DDR4 SODIMM, if I need to.
FYI, 32G DDR5 SODIMM is at least $430.
A few weeks ago, I learned the deal with refurbished business laptops. (you can google or use AI to find the info).
So, I started to shopping again.
Essentially, big corporations spend a fortune to buy or lease expensive business laptops. After the lease expires, the laptops were sent to wholesalers. They would do the checking and sort out different grades of laptops.
Excellent refurbished cost more. Decent refurbished cost less. Fair refurbished cost much less.
In this current environment, this may be a good idea for consumer with limited budget. Consumers can choose the grade of refurbished based on budget.
After I learned this a few weeks ago, I have been actively searching for a good deal.
