14oz dehydrated. Once you add water to properly rehydrate them and make them edible (because they're basically rock-hard in their dehydrated state), they're going to weigh several times that much. Being shelf-stable is part of the reason for their appeal - a lot of people like to have things like this for emergencies. Camping is another common usage: if you're going to be hiking somewhere you don't want to carry much weight, so if you know there will be water at your final destination, you can bring along dehydrated foods and then rehydrate and cook it at your camp site. It's not as good as fresh, but it's a lot better than carrying a 5 pound bag of potatoes for 15 miles.

I work with someone who eats these frequently and heats them on a hotplate in the can. No salt, no pepper, right out of the can.

Are you suggesting this 14 oz of slices will hydrate with water to roughly 5 lbs of potatoes? Genuinely asking.

I could see that, i use to work with a guy that would eat 3 boxes of mrs Ts perogies everyday, in the microwave doused with tabasco,, come in on monday morning and there were 7 empty boxes of mrs t's in the trash, 3 from Sat, 3 from Sun and 1 from that morning, oh and the kitchen area always smelled like tabasco
