They don't have internal batteries, but I angled two at me from my nightstand, each one attached to a cell phone power bank, and obviously they didn't replace an air conditioner, but they kept me from being miserable through a 36 hour power outage.

Correction: After taking it apart, there are indeed two LEDs mounted in the base of the fan. As mentioned above, you long hold the power button to toggle them on and off. I checked the older model (micro usb charging) and it has the same blue LEDs. I never knew that feature existed - although I'll likely never use it again!
