I read these for free with a library card and Libby before the show's first season. It's... okay.
Edit: Just remember that the entire first book was just loosely related short stories posted online over a few months. People liked the core idea, it made it into the right hands, so the author reworked it into a novel to publish. There was no intention of it being a major hit and he had no solid plans on the larger worldbuilding you find in the other books. It was just a standalone story. Hugh tried the same short story thing with the second book but publishers wanted a novel so that's what the editors made it into. Third book was written as a novel from the start to try to wrap everything up.
I read them during lockdowns and like the first book better. Characters and beats that I liked the most from the books didn't even really show up in the show's first season. I like the latest season of the show better though.
Different from the show but not in terms of the major plot points and themes. The show is basically up to the point of the end of the second book right now. So if you want you could hold off on reading the third book.
My wife and I loved it. Getting pretty slow recently though.
But I did read through, in large part to get to the conclusion (vs. the inevitable wait for the new TV seasons).
Overall, I give it a "meh". If you like the TV series a lot, you may likely enjoy reading (both for the conclusion and see the many subplot differences). If you are looking for great writing, nope.
