This APC Smart-UPS is a short-depth lithium ion rackmount UPS aimed at clean power, voltage regulation, and graceful shutdown for servers or NAS gear. The strongest praise centers on true UPS behavior, USB communication with Synology, email alerts, and proper shutdown signaling, with the lithium battery seen as a modern step up from older SLA units. Runtime is still only a few minutes, so it is mainly for bridging outages rather than long backup. Shipping availability is the big caveat, since the listing repeatedly shows ineligible or unconfirmed delivery to many states.

Rackmount server owners needing clean shutdowns, because it provides voltage regulation, USB communication, and remote management for Synology and networking gear.

IT setups that need true UPS behavior, because portable power stations lack voltage regulation and graceful shutdown support.
duc135 duc135
Users wanting a lithium UPS with longer service life than SLA batteries, because LiFePO4 is described as lasting far longer than lead-acid packs.
davewvu86 duc135
Short-depth rack builders, because the chassis is aimed at AVR racks and fits where deeper units are awkward.

Shoppers in states with strict shipping restrictions, because the listing can reject addresses in multiple states.
GodOSpoons phdeez O.H duc135
Budget buyers comparing watt-hours, because the runtime is short and the cost per stored energy is far higher than a portable power station.
madcow3417 phdeez duc135
Home backup buyers needing long outage runtime, because it only provides minutes before draining.
madcow3417 Redflyer
People expecting a portable power station replacement, because it is a true UPS with regulation and shutdown features rather than extended-energy storage.
duc135 duc135

The UPS can provide only a few minutes of runtime for controlled shutdowns during outages.
madcow3417 phdeez nijave
The unit can support UPS-style monitoring and shutdown signaling when paired with Synology NAS over USB.
davewvu86 davewvu86
The unit can communicate with Synology Control Panel features like email alerts and battery-life time estimates.
davewvu86 davewvu86
The short-depth rackmount design can fit rack-focused AVR setups where space is limited.

The listing can be ineligible for shipping to multiple states, which prevents purchase in those locations.
GodOSpoons phdeez duc135
The runtime claims can translate into very low usable energy, making portable power stations a more practical alternative.
madcow3417 phdeez nijave
The UPS may not provide voltage spike or sag protection, which can be a problem for environments with frequent line issues.
duc135 duc135
The listing can fail to accept shipping addresses, which blocks checkout entirely.

Common Questions (5)

No. The listing shows shipping as ineligible for multiple states, including ME, MA, VA, CA, FL, GA, and KY, and some shoppers report no shipping address is accepted at all. That makes the deal unusable for many buyers even though the price looks good.
GodOSpoons phdeez O.H duc135
Because the APC is a short-runtime UPS, while a portable power station can provide much longer backup time for the money. The APC still has the advantage of voltage regulation and UPS communication, which portable stations usually do not provide.
madcow3417 phdeez duc135 duc135
The product page shows roughly 3 to a little over 5 minutes of runtime, depending on the load shown. That is enough for a graceful shutdown, but not for extended backup power.
madcow3417 phdeez Redflyer
It is a true UPS with voltage regulation, spike/sag protection, and UPS-style communication for graceful shutdown and monitoring. Portable power stations can provide outage power, but they generally lack those UPS features and may have limited or no two-way communication.
duc135 davewvu86 duc135
Yes, it can communicate with Synology over USB, generate email alerts when power drops, and send a proper shutdown signal. It is also reported to work with Synology's built-in UPS management on newer units.

Better just to splurge for a whole hom battery. These barely give you minutes to shutdown before they drain completely.

Yes, because $700 vs. tens of thousands of dollars makes perfect sense. A 3kWh portable power station ($1200) + UPS ($300) will run your system (depending on load) for at least 18 hours for less than $1500 and that's on the high end price side.
