I did pull the trigger on the Thule compression cube set though, also on sale and had great reviews... so once I decide on a backpack, I'll be ready to go

It is smartly designed. I especially like the layout of the compartments.
It is 28L, which is more than enough space for me. This Aion is 40L which must be massive.
Just sharing my experience. Once it craps out, I will probably replace it with another one. It felt hard to pull the trigger on a backpack for more than $100 but I have to say I more than got my money's worth. Thule has some clever and smartly designed packs.

Just sharing my experience. Once it craps out, I will probably replace it with another one. It felt hard to pull the trigger on a backpack for more than $100 but I have to say I more than got my money's worth. Thule has some clever and smartly designed packs.
The 40L (and larger) are meant more as travel bag, hence the way it opens (clamshell). I'm a huge believer in using things like the 40L+ backpack for travel. My bag is a Patagonia 45L, and I absolutely love it. I've done 2 week international trips with it + a second backpack (of the 25-30L variety) though for a 2 week trip where you don't do laundry you'll need to be more strategic with your packing (and packing cubes are highly recommended). And yes, you look kinda goofy wearing a backpack in the back and a backpack in the front but I personally find it extremely convenient.
If you've been using roller luggage and don't have any issues carrying heavier weights on your shoulders (I have friends that hate the idea of having to carry extra weight themselves), you should give bags like this a try for travel. I personally find it easier to walk around and maneuver with backpacks than pulling a roller luggage since I don't have to think about stairs or curbs.
