But ... This is a tough show to watch. The first few seasons have scenes that will make you cringe (and will likely have your spouse tune out ... if not worse!).
Community Reviews
The Shield is a tense, gritty FX crime drama that stands out for its realistic seedy Los Angeles setting, escalating pressure, and a widely praised finale. Later seasons are described as especially strong, with tighter plotting and standout turns from Forest Whitaker and Walton Goggins. The main drawback is the digital SD presentation, which is called out as poor, with ghosting and a lack of HD making it hard to revisit after seeing better transfers elsewhere. A strong series, but the format limits the experience.
People who prioritize strong ensemble performances, because later seasons are singled out for standout acting and the supporting cast opens the show up beyond Vic.
Fans of FX dramas who like morally messy antiheroes, because the lead performance and the show's hard-edged tone are repeatedly praised.
Viewers who want a tense crime drama with a tightly focused final stretch, because the last three seasons build escalating tension and end with a standout finale.
Fans of realistic Los Angeles police stories, because the series is praised for its seedy, grounded portrayal of the city.
Viewers who need crisp picture quality on a modern screen, because the release is SD only and the image can ghost at normal viewing distance.
Viewers who want a lighter, less abrasive crime show, because the acting is overdone and the tone can feel censored, less funny, and stressful.
People who are sensitive to cringe-heavy early episodes, because the first seasons include scenes that can make viewers tune out.
Shoppers expecting an easy Apple TV purchase flow, because the title may not appear in search and can be hard to buy from the app.
