But ... This is a tough show to watch. The first few seasons have scenes that will make you cringe (and will likely have your spouse tune out ... if not worse!).
Community Reviews
The Shield is a tense, gritty FX crime drama that stands out for its realistic seedy Los Angeles setting, escalating pressure, and a widely praised finale. Later seasons are described as especially strong, with tighter plotting and standout turns from Forest Whitaker and Walton Goggins. The main drawback is the digital SD presentation, which is called out as poor, with ghosting and a lack of HD making it hard to revisit after seeing better transfers elsewhere. A strong series, but the format limits the experience.
The series delivers a realistic portrayal of seedy Los Angeles that stands out.
The later seasons build escalating tension and culminate in a standout finale episode.
The show can feel more rewarding when watched as a fan, because tension ratchets up continuously.
Forest Whitaker's performance in season five and Walton Goggins' presence provide standout reasons to watch.
The digital version is only available in SD quality, which limits picture quality.
SD playback can show ghosting at some viewing distances, making the series unwatchable.
The Apple TV purchase experience can be confusing because the series may not appear in search.
Early seasons can include cringe-worthy scenes that may reduce enjoyment for viewers and their households.
