The MSI Prestige 16 stands out as a thin and light creator laptop with a sharp 2.8K OLED touch screen, 32GB of RAM, and strong value for the price. The display gets especially high marks for brightness and glass with anti reflective coating, and the build feels solid with good hinges and little chassis flex. Heat is the main concern, with reports ranging from warm idle behavior to very hot left side temperatures and throttling under heavy loads, though BIOS and software cleanup reportedly help. Touchpad reliability and occasional internal memory errors also come up, making it a capable but imperfect pick for lighter everyday work.

  • The OLED display with Gorilla Glass and anti-reflective coating can deliver a premium screen experience for the price.

  • After a BIOS update and a clean Windows installation, the laptop can run much cooler for everyday programming workloads.

  • MSI has reportedly posted a fix for a related issue, and testing after following MSI instructions reportedly resolved it.

  • The 32GB RAM configuration can act as a buffer for heavy multitasking and high-tab workflows.

  • The laptop can run noticeably warmer on the left side even while idling during a Costco demo.

  • The laptop can get unbearably hot on the entire left side, with keyboard heat and thermal throttling under gaming or rendering.

  • The laptop can trigger an Internal Memory Error tied to the chipset, and troubleshooting reportedly may not fix it.

  • Sustained full-load performance can be limited by thermals, with reports that the MSI cannot maintain the same power as an Acer while staying cooler.

RAM is soldered so not upgradeeable, right? how concerned should I be about this for longevity's sake? i'm a novice about these hardware questions.

Just got one of these, It has a crazy good screen 1000nits.

For light use, it's fine, but this thing gets FIERCE hot. The vapor-chamber is way too small. If you run it full bore, the msi whole left hand side gets burning hot.

Overall vs the Acer deal, the MSI can not sustain the same powerlimit. The Acer is alot faster and it can do it without getting burning hot. The cooler is much bigger, and yet the acer weighs 100g less.

It's a shame that such a promising machine has such poor thermal performance. Which Acer model?

The 999 bestby one.

If you look at the msi heatsink, it's too thin, only about 2.5mm thick where the fins are.

The acer heatsink is only slightly bigger, but the fin stack is much taller, so it's an overall bigger heatsink.

The MSi can only sustain 25watt long, the acer can sustain 45watt and still be cooler.

BIG difference.

I'm returning the msi, but it may work for other people that won't need that power budget, for $1400, I feel it's a little much to compromise on.

32gb ram has been semi overkill for a lot of people for the last 15 years.... I opened my old machine from 2011 and it had 64gb ram as does any other computer I build, but it's totally unnecessary. Many people won't go over 20gb with a ton of tabs open on a laptop, usually that level of multitasking requires multiple screens, so the 32gb is just a buffer.

Unless you're doing extreme tasks, you won't need more than 32gb in the next 5 years for an average/power user.

Make sure to always turn your comp off, only put it to sleep for the day. Make sure to look up how to turn off startup programs. 32GB is premium, and these speeds for ram are insane.

MSI post a fix to the issue. I've tested and confirmed that the issue is resolved after following the instructions. https://www.msi.com/faq/faq-12497
