I'd skip the gen 2 if possible. It's not future proof. They last long but a gen 3 would probably last you longer.

I already have a few that I wiped the Amazon garbage off it and have the custom android rom installed. It is great value for what you get.

It is lineage OS. I then installed view assist companion app and can customize the dashboard to my liking. I have can display the status of the alarm, doors, locks and night mode on the beside clock and can also have a dynamic morning and night button to activate/deactivate night mode.
I like hobbies like this, so I'l go slow and learn the prcess and go for it. I can remove the show5 and show 8's out of boxes in closet, ... and hopefully use these devices again. I did love them many years ago, so ... I can tinker ... and have a little fun.
