Tablo 4th Gen is a simple over the air DVR that shines for easy local recording, a friendly interface, and two tuner recording for two shows at once. It works well with Roku and Google TV, can fast forward through recordings, and the app also pulls in free streaming channels. The main knocks are slow menus and channel changes, occasional app or network glitches, and heat related reliability concerns. Storage is tight at 128GB, so an external drive is often needed, and ATSC 3.0 uncertainty hangs over its long term future.
The Tablo can provide a better user interface and easier DVR experience than HDHomeRun for local OTA recording.
The Tablo can work well with Roku and can deliver strong picture quality when airflow and reception are handled.
The Tablo can integrate with Plex for recording and playback features like commercial skip.
The Tablo software can be more convenient than using a TV's built-in antenna guide directly.
The Tablo can require frequent reboots or restarts due to app crashes and playback errors during data loss.
The Tablo can have unresolved freezing and live TV playback failures when used with Apple TV and HomePod setups.
The Tablo can be slow to boot and slow to change channels compared with TiVo-style OTA DVR use.
The Tablo can overheat and die within about five months, even when it is in use.

"If you rely on the built-in 128GB then they get transcoded and you lose quality. "
Looks like I need to know more about "transcoded", process, and options
Thanks
Unless things start happening fast, I don't see the full conversion to 3.0 happening anytime soon. As I stated in a previous post, the DFW area still only has one major network (Fox) broadcasting in 3.0. 2027 isn't that far into the future and I haven't heard of the other network stations (ABC, CBS, NBC and PBS) here adding 3.0 anytime soon.

But the real question is how long we will get TV guide info on these devices.
Did that ever get settled
I have a feeling they are waiting it out now with others like SiliconDust HDhomerun models when it comes to DRM.

After returning this I got an HD HomeRun and it has been working flawlessly for about 2 years. Yes, Tablo is cheaper and there is no subscription fee, but if you are not paying for a subscription, your viewing habits etc are "paying" for the product.
I wouldn't buy another Tablo.
I upgraded the dedicated plex from a 16gb 3770k because after a plex version update about 4 years ago, I started getting endless lag and crashes when like pausing then skipping commercials while watching football games.
I'm tired of plex's issues. I even gave the thing a 3060 12gb card about 3 years ago, problem remains even though plex is using hardware encoding.
What version model number is this original Tablo I've noticed people talk well of, so I can search marketplace for it? Thanks
This worked fine with 16GB of RAM too, so I don't think amount of RAM is the issue. I built the Plex server using spare parts from hardware I had around the house, which is why I'm using such an old CPU. But it works, so I'm gonna keep using it!
