Forget the research I did, but got a refurb HD Homerun a year ago and been happy with it. I am not recording anything though, and I believe there is an annual fee for the channel lineup in order to record.

Basically zero setup just download the app on any device - it finds it on the network.

If you want to watch outside your network get a used Sling AirTV box. Can use it with a free sling account - but the interface is kinda crappy.
Slightly incorrect on the recording. An account gets you 14 days of guide.
Free gives you 3 days.

Account also lets you do season long recordings.

I have the original 2-tuner and it's been a workhorse. I use the legacy app, attic antenna, and 1TB external. I still can't justify updating to the newer interface, but this seems like a great deal.
I use an HDHomeRun working with a dedicated plex server running 32GB with an 11700K.

I upgraded the dedicated plex from a 16gb 3770k because after a plex version update about 4 years ago, I started getting endless lag and crashes when like pausing then skipping commercials while watching football games.

I'm tired of plex's issues. I even gave the thing a 3060 12gb card about 3 years ago, problem remains even though plex is using hardware encoding.

What version model number is this original Tablo I've noticed people talk well of, so I can search marketplace for it? Thanks

'Been eyeing the Tablo knowing my FireTV Recast is going to die one day.
I just got the Tablo and the only thing I miss from the Recast is that it doesn't integrate with the FireTV live channels, so you have to use their app. Other than that it has been trouble free, but haven't used it much yet.

Well I think this might be the beging of the end of these models. Hopefully a atsc 3.0 tuner is around the corner. It might be the end for the company tablo. The whole atsc 3.0 debacle has cooled any interest untill it is all sorted out. Brodcasters have asked top drop atsc 1.0 as soon as atsc 3.0 is ratified around 2028. No "gateway device" does atsc3 and I doubt there will be. The end is nearer than you think..

I did look at youtube video's on this device, then went to amazon and looked at latest reviews, ... tons of 1 star reviews saying it will not last, many people complaining.

Generally, review ratings like this bum me out.
I still have tivo roamia 4 tuner with lifetime sub ... and it's unpluged, I plug it in during football season, but not sure I will do it this year, since youtube has nfl game highlights of any game ...

Mostly, I do streaming stuff now, and plex server stuff. I remember in the past I was raving about tivo stuff, ... times sort of changed for me.

Agree on the ease of the slingbox airtv, BUT Sling tv the company is on the death watch list. A airtv Anywhere is kind of priecy if they fold ($100 used). The tuner is a slingtv only product. If they go under (cord cutters news predict real soon becase of the Dish Network looming bankruptcy.

The only device that is open is the hd homerun boxes. You do not nessesarily need HdHomerun to stay in buisness because of 3rd party suport (plex, Kodi ect)..

Great deal, and mine has been flawless. I've been very mindful to keep it as cool as possible, so it sits on a small baker's rack for good airflow. I also use an external antenna amplifier instead of the one inside the unit, so that's turned off as well. So far, it's been great with Roku and the picture quality is fantastic. Still, when the switchover is made to ATSC 3.0 in a few years, this will be essentially worthless.

Tablo is definitely going to make an ATSC 3.0 device. Yes, they are trying to push these now to sell hardware. They are probably making a ton of money at the moment.

That being said... I bought one of these in April, and it died 2 weeks ago while in use, so I got about 5 months before it fried. They sent a replacement without needing any proof though with the 1 year warranty. The software on these are much better than using your TV's guide straight into an antenna in my opinion.

If you have a router capable of vpn, or want to setup a raspberry pi as your vpn endpoint, HDHomeRun is accessible from anywhere.(not using the HDHomeRun app, but android and iOS have other options)

Nothing has worked well since Windows Media Center. I used that with HDHomerun for years. First with a cable card and then OTA. Everything else I've tried since then has been buggy or didn't work. I don't have the time to fiddle anymore.
